So I have a question about a laptop and the PCI-E slots.

So I bought a Lenovo Yoga 720-151 Intel Core 7 about a year and a half ago and I only use if for gaming. It does great. Most of the time. But harder when running 40 plus man raids and such. It runs a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 which i am also trying to find out if can be upgraded. But I was looking at my motherboard through Speccy and I have 4 PCI-E x1 slots and 1 is being used. I also have a PCI-E x4 slot which is not being used. Ive been trying to read up and it says that it can increase my speed (i’m hoping they were right) but I need to know if that’s true and even worth my time. Would upgrading or adding cards help? I do not plan of getting rid of the laptop anytime soon as it still runs top notch. I could probably do the upgrade myself because I have done some internal workings on desktops. Can anyone help me out? How the about the graphics card as well? I could always go back to my desktop because I bought a competely upgradeable one but I really prefer my laptop due to freedom. Thanks again. Have a great night.

Ok so your laptop will have several x1 lanes, however they are not all accessible, most are for USB ports or Ethernet as they have to communicate with the chipset which connects to the processor. It is possible to use an external gpu, however you will loose your wifi card or your nvme ssd to do so and even then it will more then likely end up like a desktop. Whenever you use an external video card with a laptop not made for it it is rare that it works on the laptop screen as it is connected directly to the onboard graphics, meaning it would only connect to monitors, so when all is said and done it’d be much cheaper to just put together a budget desktop at that point instead of trying to use an external gpu.
