Why does my music play through the outside of the earphones?

Somehow from one day to another, my earpods started malfunctioning. At first, they played music the normal way, but now when i put it in the same way, the sound is really bad. The music seemingly comes out of the opposite side, meaning if I listen to music, everyone else gets to “enjoy” as well. It appears to be an earpod issue, because it happens on both my Macbook and my iPhone. Can someone explain how this has happened, and if I can reverse it? Thanks in advance :)
