MSI GE63VR 7RE no post, black screen, no beeps

I turned my Laptop before going to college and it was working fine so i put it in my bag and went to college as when I turned my laptop on in college I got this no post issue, laptop powers on, I get one blink form the caps lock led when I press the power key the fans turn on and I get a dim black screen no splash screen, no beeps

Update (12/21/2018)

I got it working.

I got home opened the back and removed one of the ram sticks and turned on, laptop works

After I put the ram stick back in and turn on the laptop, works fine

So I don't know how this fixed my issue but it did if someone can help me with figuring out how this fixed it and what went wrong would be really helpful

Hi @dank_heehaw ,

Try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen to check if there is a display showing on the laptop screen after it has been turned on. It will be very faint so try it in a darkened room as a help to see.

If there is a display visible on the screen, then you have a display backlight problem. This could be either a faulty backlight power supply on the motherboard, a faulty backlight power cable or cable connection at either end, motherboard or screen (if separate from the LVDS cable - don’t know your laptop but on some it is incorporated in the same cable) or a faulty display panel backlight circuit.

If there is no display showing on the screen when using the torch, try connecting an external monitor to the laptop (even a TV if it has the appropriate inputs can be a monitor) and see if it has a display or not with the laptop on.

If there is no display on the external monitor either then you either have a GPU or motherboard problem or both.

If there is a display on the external monitor then you either have a faulty LVDS cable or cable connection at either end or a faulty display panel. Try gently pressing around the hinge area between the body of the laptop and the lid (don’t know which side, left or right) to check if you can make the display come on or not. The LVDS cable passes through the hinge to get from the motherboard to the display panel, and may have been damaged.

The display backlight is just turning on, i am not getting any display output, I also checked with an external display and got nothing

This thing happened to me the day before and I thought it was a cold boot issue so I used a Hair Dryer to heat the CPU and my laptop worked fine till I brought it to college the next day

Hi @dank_heehaw ,

Sounds like a problem with the GPU connection to the motherboard. Beyond my competence, maybe one for the experts in motherboard repair. Sorry.

Hi @dank_heehaw ,

Given that there were no beeps when it didn't work I'm surprised that removing / replacing the RAM resolved the problem.

Have you checked that the "beeps" work by removing the RAM and starting the laptop?
