"Phone is disabled try again in 1 hour" after screen change

This happens to me on a regular basis. I get a phone in, its working fine except for a broken screen. I change the screen (Disconnect battery of course) put it back together and BANG! Phone is disabled, try again in 1 hour. I did not enter any passcodes at all. I turn it on, after the apple logo I get “Try again in 1 hour” That in itself is only 1/2 the problem. An hour never comes! It will count down from 1 hour, usually one minute doesn’t equal 1 minute, and it usually stops somewhere is the 40’s. Not always, but it does stop somewhere. So here I am, for example, stuck at “Try again in 47 minuets” and 5 min later “Try again in 47 minuets” and then 10 min later “Try again in 47 minuets..”

This has happened at least twice to me. I actually just finished working on another phone as I type this, and although its now down to “Try again in 40 minuets” I am not expecting it to get all the way to zero and let me enter a passcode, because it hasn’t in the past.

WTF is going on? What am I doing wrong? Or is it me at all? Is there a way to prevent this from happening during a repair? I am getting a lot of upset customers from this.

P.S. I just checked it. Its been at least 3-4 minuets, if not more. Still “Try again in 40 minuets.”

I am having the exact same issue I skips the 1 min 5 min delay etc and goes straight for an hour! But then doesn’t count down correctly! I have a feeling it’s too do with disconnecting the battery. Anyone found a fix for this issue?

Thanks

Matt

I have an iPhone 7 that had a badly damaged screen and home button. The home button was cracked as well as the screen shattering. I ordered a screen replacement. Hooked it up including the damaged home button. I got a flashing white apple logo. The solution to try for the flashing logo was to hook the screen up without the home button connected. I did that and now I get the iPhone is disabled message for X number of minutes. It is counting down but the date and time on the home screen are off by several days. It thinks it's 12/29/2019 when it's 1/2/2020. I need to configure wifi when I get pass the authentication screen. It also is giving me a searching for Cellular service. So I'm not surprised the date and time are not correct on the Home Screen. After it counted down, I did get to a screen where I could enter a passcode. It timed out before I could get the correct passcode. It started a 2nd 15 minute countdown sequence. I'm hoping I can get back to the point where I can enter the correct passcode.

After countdown expired, I attempted to open on of the push notifications on the home screen and I was prompted for a passcode. I entered the correct passcode and got the the home screen with all apps. the phone connected to wifi and the correct time was able to sync. Now If I can figure out how to enable a floating home button now that the home button is broken.

It is possible that a defective screen could be “inputting” codes, similar to ghost touching. Once you get to ~9 attempts, the iPhone will be disabled for an hour. If the phone isn’t connecting to the internet (WiFi or LTE) then the clock settings may not work properly either.

If this is the case, it could be caused by a bad screen but you are seeing this on multiple occasions. You either have a poor supply of screens or there is something else you are doing incorrectly. Ideally, you may want to try a screen replacement job between two known-good devices and/or screens to see if there is an issue with your method or not.

It would be incredibly unlikely that would be the case. First off, it doesn't show me a lock screen, and then random buttons get pressed. Apple logo. No apple logo. Disabled try again in 1 hour. Nothing in between. But even if it DID happen, exactly 9 times, on 2 devices, faster then I can possibly see, the 1 min delay after a few attempts were skipped didn't' happen, the 5 min delay after a few more attempts didn't happen, then both times, on 2 different phones, the screen miraculously fixed it self, both times after a restore. I personally don't think your scenario is possible.

You're not giving us much to work on here so I am just proposing possibilities:

1) you have bad screens

2) you're doing something wrong.

I also proposed a process where you could test to see if you may are doing something incorrectly. You're the one with a problem here so showing a closed-mindedness and discounting people's answers is not the best approach to finding solutions.

I can't see any alternative answer either here, it's not an Apple hardware or software related issue for sure.

Robert I agree with the above answers but I would like to add that you should make note which devices do and do not show accurate clocks. The next time you see this issue, record whether or not the home screen clock is accurate. After a battery pull if the phone had no cellular signal and no wifi than the time and date may be incorrect. Try to determine if there is a no service/wrong time/disabled countdown error correlation. If so, your solution may lie in keeping some active SIM cards around to make sure the time and date can be automatically updated.

I have a similar issue with a client’s iPhone 6S that just had a screen replacement.

It came to me disabled … let the hour (actually was closer to 1h55mins) expire, and proceeded to the pre-repair checks.

After replacing the screen, phone powered up and again disabled 1 hour. Let the hour expire, and could get back into the phone. Then I did a hard reset (home + power), and again the phone disabled itself for an hour.

There is nothing wrong with my screen supply. I’ve been using same supplier for 4+ years, and very happy with them. I am assuming that the disabling has something to do with incorrect time. I’ll post more details in about an hour … LOL!

My iphone is doing this as well but was already ghost touching from my cracked screen before. But this time my phone had died n the night and then i charged it i watched the apple logo come on and when i went to use it it said iphone disabled for 59mins. i was like wow that was quick for it to try however many times it takes for a hour lock. I didn’t even think of the in betweens that definitely didn’t happen. this is some type of issue i blamed my screen but it doesnt really make alot of sense.
