It started maybe a month or so ago. I’ve dropped it but nothing crazy. I’ve always had the apple extended battery case on it for extra protection. It hasn’t got wet or any repairs.
Sounds like your iPhone was bitten by the microphone issue that plagued (and continues to plague) many iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users. Apple had a sort of unofficial repair program going on for out-of-warranty devices but that ended several months ago.
You might be able to convince Apple to repair your device free of charge but I wouldn't count on it. Otherwise, replacing the microphone assembly will *probably* solve the issue.
