SSD Upgrade - followed by surprisingly bad write speed

Upgraded my completely new MBA 2017 to ADATA SX8200 480GB, using the (short black) Sintech adapter.

Upgrade went smooth, installed Mojave including ™ backup, with reported PCIe 2.0 4x speed, 5 GT from system report.

No kernel paniks, no problem with stand by, and actully a very nice system stand by time.. Coconut Batt reports more than 11 hours battery time on a full charge.

I did not use Kapton tape, as the adapter seemed factory shielded on that particular side.

But alas.. even though everything seems good, and I’ve got terrific sequential speeds, something seems pretty wrong with (in particular) 4K WRITE speeds. Dont this seem way too low..??! o_O

Thanks

Trying to contribute to shed some light, here’s the data squeezed from an i7 Air from 2014 with an original Apple SSD with 70% free space..hope it helps.

Thanks a lot; I had no idea what speeds to expect, but your post shed some light.

Yep! Way to low but thats to be expected as you used the wrong SSD!

Review this great guide: The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs. Return your stuff and get either a real Apple SSD or either an OWC or Transcend SSD designed for your system.

I dont get your point. Neither OWC or Transcend is mentioned in this article.

What IS mentioned, is that my MBA is able to run “PCIe 2.0 x4 lanes up till 500gb”, which I already know.

Would you care to elaborate?

The SSD I installed is US $137 including shipping.

The SSD in your first link is US $515 including shipping and VAT, (and is out of stock).

Im sure you see why I choose the one I did, and you still haven’t been anywhere near an explanation on why the ADATA shows such a slow read speed OR If that was to be expected - and why. One might wonder If you’re actually a reseller. :)

For what Its worth; I checked screen shot of a speed measure previously made with same app, on the stock 120gb Apple SSD.

It shows aproximately the same slow write speed 4K QD32.

22~29MB/s.

What write speed would one be expecting in this field on a MBA 13 2015/17, and do I have a defect of some kind...?

Simply put the ADATA is a low end PCIe/AHCI SSD! You get what you pay for. In addition the using the wrong SSD via an adapter which creates signal lag and low level CRC errors. I don't recommend them nor use them.

I have no interest in any of these companies other than being a customer my self! If you feel so strongly why aren't you talking to ADATA? And besides how do I possibly make anything in this as a seller the links are not linked to me in any way. You asked for them! As you didn't want to make the effort to look them up your self.

Did you review the first link I posted? It offers the details. I suspect you didn't study it fully.

Your system is able to support both a PCIe/AHCI & PCIe/NVMe SSD you clearly are not using the better PCIe/NVMe SSD your 2017 model uses.

First of all, I need you to notice this review of the ADATA SX 8200 SSD. If you have ever heard of TomsHardware, you know there's an misalignment between them calling it "the best mainstream NVMe SSD we ever tested", and you calling it "low end".

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ada...

Second of all, the Sintech adapter has been extensively reviewed by hundreds of people in apple MacBooks with great succes, this is just one of the many many threads

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/upg...

Yesterday I measured my girlfriends 2017 MacBook Pro with stock 256GB Apple NMVe SSD, https://www.dropbox.com/s/a15quxtnphkovm...

Im not completely sure why her 4K write speeds are even lower (like 30-60%) than mine with my upgraded SSD. But what I do know is she didn't upgrade or touch anything, its only 25% full and in perfect working condition.

Whats your comment on the above?

Well, my ADATA SX8200 is behaving just fine in write and speed as you can see its performance compared to original apple disk…

Only battery life is getting pretty worse now. I guess I lose around one third of juice. and it is pretty disappointing. Is it the same for you, guys?

Sorry for the late reply. Mine is more or less keeping the original battery time. Which is my exact reason for choosing the ADATA before eg. the much more loved Samsung Evo 970.. which uses a lot more power and run hotter.

I hardly ever use my MBA as its basically my backup laptop. But thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I would, though, recommend you to measure with Am.Diskmark, as Black Magic measures only sustained r/w speeds and not random search speeds. : )
