Where do Obsolete iMacs go 2.0?

Haven’t had any comments on my last comments to the original question, so will try asking question “2.0”.

I definitely need some help, or tell me I’m beyond help.

So, on Nov 3, '18, replaced the drive with the SSHD (I was wrong, it took 20 mins start to finish because I was taking pics as I went)

Used the old HD to create a Time Machine Backup Drive, then off and running to upgrades.

Purchased discs and upgraded to Lion 10.7.5, then Mountain Lion 10.8.5 with no problems, but still not where I need to be.

From there everything indicates I should be able to download and install El Capitan 10.11, but this is where I'm stuck.

The only way to get to the Apple Store download is by using Chrome. Then when I do reach, then select, "get El Capitan" it switches back to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 download. (I'm already running 10.8.5 at this point)

So taking a chance, I purchased a "El Capitan install USB". I was so optimistic, and the install going so great, (I thought) then about 20 mins in the following pops up, "OS X could not be installed on your computer. An error occurred while extracting files from the package 'Essentials.pkg'. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again." I tried again, but same result. I have now restored back to 10.8.5 thanks to Time Machine Backup.

I think I'm not smart enough to solve this and reach my goal of "Sierra". Can anyone help.

Whew did you get this El Capitan install USB? What all is on it? Will ir even boot from it?

On the point of where you got it from you only want to get those installers from Apple only.

mayer, Aaron Cook, I am of course embarrassed to say where I got it, but every time I have tried to get any help from Apple, I have hit a brick wall (unsupported iMac and all that). I thought I was O.K. by "verifying" it on Disk Utility, etc. (which says it was good?) I think you know, without a working (Upgraded) iMac I can't get anything thru Apple Store.

@fargo this may be the root of your problem. Try getting the Sierra installer from Apple and create a bootable USB using that installer.

Aaron, "may" being the key word, I don't think that was the problem, but I took the purchased USB and destroyed it. I then took Dan's advice mentioned earlier and "successfully" created a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive on a new USB flash drive and tried it. It (install) too was of course rejected by my computer, which didn't surprise me because I think I must need El Capitan 10.11 first. So, since Apple will no longer let me have it , and unless someone can tell me where I can get a "legit" install/upgrade drive, guess I'm reaching the point of considering "abandoning" my project. I suspect you (all) are getting weary of this also. I would appreciate it if you would stick with me, but understand if you don't.

Take a look at the date on the El Capitain installation. Change the date on your computer to a month after that date. You will need to turn off the auto time feature in Date and time. This works a lot of the time.

I agree! Apple places a certificate check in the installer so the installer will only work within the window Apple sets. Basically, it's the date of the next release that often becomes the end of the window. So for El Capitan that would be Sept 2016.

Thanks, will give it a try. What's the format? mo, day, and year? or just mo and year? I've read several question/answer forums lately, and although dated (old) suggesting removing memory and reinstalling one at a time etc. Any validity to that?

Here's the command line argument to set it: Changing system date from Terminal – OS X recovery

Altering the RAM won't effect the date & time setting.

This is really SIMPLE: Click on the time the upper right hand corner of the screen. Go to open Date and Time preferences. Click on Date & Time. Click on the lock and enter your password. Uncheck the Set date and time automatically. Go to the box that states the date and time. Click on the month and change it to a month after the date of the system install. Now do the year. Close it and install the system.

Not so simple on this machine. Tried it that way, also tried resetting command line from terminal as per Dan, both said no, no. "Operation Not Permitted". Back to square One.

You can use this Sierra patch tool by DosDude1 to create a bootable Sierra installation USB and you can try to boot from that.

Doing all of the patching isn't necessary because this machine is natively supported.

@ajcooke01 - You don't need DosDude1's stuff at all!

This system will run natively upto High Sierra 10.13.x just using the Apple OS installers.

Frankly, I recommend stopping at Sierra 10.12.x as High Sierra has issues with SATA based SSD's

@danj The patch tool is great for creating bootable USBs, that's why I included that. I agree that this machine is natively supporting Sierra and the patching isn't necessary.

@danj I have not had luck with createinstallmedia in the past, so I just use those tools instead.

I've always cheated using DiskMaker X which does all of the work.
