MacBook Pro Stops Charging on High Load

Hi,

Since a few days, when my MacBook Pro is connected to the MagSafe power source and I Log On … Open an app that demands more resources like virtual machine, iPhone simulator in Xcode, etc., The computer stops charging (MagSafe LED goes off) and I have to disconnect from power, wait at least 15-20 seconds and connect it again in order to start charging again.

The battery has 724 cycles and Coconut Battery says is in good condition.

Hope someone can help.

Lets look at this from a different direction. What do you have for RAM & storage?

More RAM (max 16 GB) and going with a SSD will improve power usage over low RAM and using a HDD.

I have 16 GB of RAM and SSD for a few years, never had that problem.

Lets check the MagSafe charger and its connection to your system. Refer to this Apple T/N Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters focus on the cable and connector condition. Often times the connector faces are dirty, use a cotton swab (Q-Tip) with some isopropyl alcohol to clean them.

The next time your MagSafe LED goes out quickly open CoconutBattery and take a fresh snapshot.

At this point I’m thinking the DC-In Board plastic insulator is warping as the current load is warming it up. Here’s the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2011 MagSafe DC-In Board Replacement and here’s the needed part: MacBook Pro Unibody 13" and 15" MagSafe DC-In Board

Hi Dan,

I cleaned the connector with isopropyl alcohol, checked the cable and is in good condition, but the problem persists.
