Looking to replace some exterior parts. Need help on compatible models

Hello,

I own a mid-2009 15" Macbook Pro (MC118LL/A). It is still running fairly well, but a few things concern me. One is the hinge from the lcd screen to the main body is cracking (picture attached) and the housing at the back of the lcd screen, where the lighted apple logo is, is fairly scratched and has oxidized spots.

It’s hard to find this exact 2009 model in decent condition where I could swap out these parts. Does anyone know if earlier (2008 or 2009) or later models (late 2009 or 2010) have compatible housing? I found a late 2008 Macbook that looks promising but I don’t know if its compatible. What about the cracking hinge? can that be swapped out?

I don’t have a lot of money, but what ultimately plan to do, aside from re-doing some of the exterior, is replace the hard drive with an SSD and replace the battery which has just about run its course. I’m hoping to run a higher operating system than OSX Lion as numerous web pages refuse to properly load or makes my system run hot. Some times, the fan noise is incredible.

Also, my track pad doesn’t work when I click it by pushing. Is a 2008 model compatible?

Anyhow, appreciate anyone’s friendly advice.

Unfortunately no, screen assemblies of the two Macs have different cables and cannot be simply swapped. Same thing applies to the trackpad, when it comes to the late 2008/early 2009 model you have a different model. You’ll have to stick to 2009, early 2010 models, but just just the ones with core2duo processor, the 2010 i5 are very different inside. I can’t see any picture with the cracking hinge, but if you refer to the black plastic hinge cover, that’s the same size for all a1286 15” models. An Ssd can surely speed up the Mac quite a bit and your model can be updated with El Capitan natively. If you have a high temperatures problem, it might be needed an internal cleanup to fans and heatsink and if it hasn’t been done before thermal paste is certainly dry and needs replaced too.

You are the dasher of hopes and dreams but thank you for your in depth answer. Also you couldn't see the picture because like I do with most emails, I talk about a picture and forget to include it. I have included it now for reference in a post below this one. I think it may just be the plastic protective cover I need?

Also in reference to the unibody displays -

when I was checking the ifixit website for screen displays, it says that the unibody displays are "compatible with all 15" Unibody MacBook Pros. 15.4” screens... from A1286 Late 2008 to Late 2011." I'm not really interested in replacing my screen at the moment, just that aluminum housing for the lcd.

Does that alter your reply at all?

The specific model I am looking at for parts is MC026LL/A.

Unfortunately I have to confirm that the compatibility is about the lcd display only, the screen assemblies are compatible just as per my previous answer. It seems I also understood correctly the cracking issue, involving only the plastic clutch cover, that's the same for all models. I'm sure with a little patience you'll manage to find the parts you need, 15" are usually in better shape than the smaller ones, it'll be a matter of time. Good luck with your search!
