When I turn 3DS on, blue light appears but screen is black (has CFW)

So I was playing ACNL, then I put my 3DS in sleep mode after I was done playing. A week later, I come back to play and the screen is all black, though the blue light is still there. I figured it must have somehow froze, so I held the power button to turn it off entirely. Unfortunately, after that, every time I tried to turn the system on, the blue light appears, but the screens remain black, and I can’t actually do anything on the system. I‘m not sure what to do. If it matters at all, it does have CFW installed, but I doubt that’s the issue, as it’s been installed for about a couple years by now with no problems.

Hi!

You could try the following:

  1. Remove the battery
  2. Press the power button a couple of times
  3. Plug in the power adapter. Try turning it on.
  4. Remove the power adapter
  5. Insert the battery, plug the adapter in
  6. Try to power the console on again. If it works, you’re good, otherwise I’d try the same again also with removing the SD card.

Sorry for the late reply. I actually had seen someone else suggest this as well so I wanted to try it, but unfortunately the screws are stripped so I can’t actually get to the little nudge in order to pull out the battery. But the back cover itself broke off since it was kind of cracked, so I’m able to access the SD Card, just not the battery. Is there any way I can remove the screw?

This worked! I was about to give up hope when the wifi-chip fix only worked once, but before my eyes it finally turned on. Thank you so much!

Pranav, if you still need a way to open up your 3ds (after 4 years) you can try using a rubber band between the screwdriver and the screw, and as a last result you can drill off the screw top.

Thank you! It worked!

I had this happen to me. I followed the steps above. I also removed the game that was inside after doing these steps, and turned it back on. : )

Thanks for the attempt to help, but unfortunately none of this worked. I may have to try and get it repaired somewhere.

This is a fairly well known bug with luma. Turn it on and leave it open and undisturbed for about 10 minutes. If it boots by then, you're good to go and probably won't have to worry about this again

Do you have any advice for a 3ds that is having this problem without any CFW installed?

@standardtoad When did it start, and what were you doing with it just before?

Well, this happened some time ago and I basically gave up. I was playing some MH4U and doing the online mode when the 3ds crashed. It was able to reboot, but after I continued playing it crashed again and got stuck on the black screen of death. I then used the safe boot to try and check for updates, but I wasn't missing any and the 3ds still wouldn't boot normally, always going to the BSoD. I then checked online and tried methods like disconnecting and reconnecting whatever the thing on step 12 of the teardown highlighted in orange is. That worked for about 2-3 boots until it crashed again and got stuck on BSoD after playing some online Pokemon. Around this point, the safe boot no longer worked, since it would crash after about 2 seconds. The last thing I did which worked temporarily was the procedure mentioned in the top answer here, but it only worked for one boot and didn't work after that. As of now, the 3ds no longer boots even using safe mode and none of the methods that worked before succeed any more.

The teardown I mean is the Nintendo 3DS XL 2015 Motherboard Replacement. I have the New Nintendo 3DS XL, SNES model. Nintendo has already rejected my device for repairs, which I guess was because either the warranty expired or because I bought it from Amazon instead of directly from them.

@darthmango I don't know if this is enough information to figure out what is wrong, but the main problem that seemed to happen was that even though the 3ds was updated and had internet connection, the crashes all seemed to happen when playing games and using the online features.

I just had this issue today with LumaCFW and I just took out the SD card, tried to turn it on a few times, put the SD card back in, then turned it on once more. Worked like a charm.

Anyone have any ideas on what could possibly be wrong if I have tried to Wi-Fi fix and it doesn't make screen turn on? I'm at a loss. This originally stopped working 13 months after purchase and Nintendo wouldn't fix because it was after 1 year warranty window. And I was angry so was boycotting paying the $150 fee to have fixed. Now I wish I would've done that because they do not even repair these any more

When you encounter a situation where your Nintendo 3DS displays a blue light upon startup but has a black screen, especially if it has Custom Firmware (CFW) installed, there could be several factors at play. Custom Firmware modifications can sometimes lead to unexpected issues. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset by holding down the power button for about 15 seconds until the device turns off. Then, turn it back on to see if the issue is resolved.
  2. Remove SD Card: If you have an SD card inserted, remove it and try turning on the 3DS without it. Sometimes, issues with the SD card or its contents can cause startup problems.
  3. Recharge Battery: Ensure that the 3DS has a sufficient charge. Connect it to the charger and leave it for some time. Then, attempt to turn it on again.
  4. Boot Without SD Card: If your 3DS has a custom firmware, try booting without the SD card containing CFW files. Sometimes, conflicts in CFW files can cause issues.
  5. Safe Mode: Depending on your CFW, you might be able to boot into a safe mode. Research how to access the safe mode for your specific CFW and see if that helps.
  6. Inspect CFW Setup: If you recently modified or updated your custom firmware, double-check that you followed the correct procedures and used compatible software. Incorrect CFW setup can lead to issues.
  7. Check for Corrupted Files: Sometimes, corrupted files can cause startup issues. If you can access your 3DS's SD card from a computer, try scanning it for errors or removing any potentially problematic files.
  8. Check for Brick: Be cautious if you suspect your 3DS might be "bricked." A bricked device is essentially unusable and might require advanced recovery methods. If you're unfamiliar with this term, it's best to research and understand it before proceeding.
  9. Visit Community Forums: If you're comfortable with the technical aspects of custom firmware, consider seeking help on dedicated forums for CFW users. Other members might have encountered similar issues and could offer insights.
  10. Professional Assistance: If none of the above steps work and you're unable to resolve the issue, you might need to seek professional assistance or contact the community for more advanced troubleshooting.

No CFW installed. All the above options had previously been tried and failed. This seems like a copy-and-pasted article without too much regard for details...
