Headset not registering, mic icon is crossed out

4 month old controllers for Xbox one Sm, bought 2 headsets they will not register on the xbox one , connected via 3.5mm jack on the controller. Tried unplugging everything, reset controllers, re synced controllers, looked at all the volume settings but nothing works. The Mic icon on the screen is always crossed out
