power supply repair

My aging Mac Pro G5 (late 2005) has a blown power supply. What is the cheapest way to get this running again? The Apple replacement part seems a bit pricey. Is it possible to use generic replacement parts and get it running again?

Unfortunately, the Late 2005 Power Mac G5 series uses a custom power supply, as do all Power Mac G5s. To make matters worse, these supplies are rated at 750W to 1kW depending on the model.

Attempting to repair the power supply itself would not be recommended, due to the high voltages involved. Further complicating the matter, removing the power supply from these models requires completely gutting the machine - a very labor intensive prospect, with risk of damaging the processor modules and logic board.

Try to get your local Apple Store or AASP to cover this repair under the REP, if possible.

If not, it is worth having the repair done by Apple or an AASP, as the flat rate labor is a real deal on these units - it takes a competent technician several hours to complete this repair successfully.

I knew this problem. Had a different issue with an other PM G5 Dual with a defective 1000 W PowerSupply. I solved it by searching the www espacially in Germany where I live, for an company who repairs Power Supplies very cheap but with quality. Found one talked with them and disassamble the PowerSupply and send it to them 5 days after it was repaired and it cost under 180 EUR incl. 6 Month of warranty.

You must know that all powersupplies are nearly the same for an electrican. So go for it there are cheap ways to solve that problem.

Apple has an extended warranty on the late G5 Power Macs

my first port of call would be seeing if you are covered underneath that program. If you purchased in Oct 2005 then Apple may argue that it is now too old to be covered, but I know in the UK you may be further covered by local sales regulations (the warranty extension program would give you leverage here).

some people (Including me) have sucessfully converted an ATX PC Power supply to run on a powermac G4, with some modification, you might be able to get one to run on a G5, the disadvantage to this, id that ATX Power supplies don't have the 25V lead needed to run the ADC Displays, but with some cable cutting and rewiring, wot may be able to stuff the guts into a G5 Power supply, here is the link to my youtube video of my modded power supply:

I wouldnt reccomend this as a permenant soultion, but for the time, it was alot cheaper then buying a $200 power supply.

Power Mac G4 power supplies are much closer in spec to ATX supplies, some are even drop in replacements. G5's are completely different animals, however :(

I'm not sure of the G5 voltages, but if you only nees 3.3V,5V, and 12V, you may be able to get it to work, though you would need a 500W+ Power supply. This works in the G4's but it doesn't carry the 25V, which is ok only because the only thing that needs the 25V is the graphics card to drive ADC displays, however, if the cpu's or mobo in the G5 need the 25V, than it won't work, G5's were very, very picky computer's, they may detect the missing volatge, and won't work.

Don't think so an Apple one might be necessary. Depends how generic, do you mean all macs or all computers?

Hi -

I went through the same issue with the same model about 3-1/2 months ago. However, I escaped spending just under $100 US to get a replacement. Given you're not US-domestic, that may be an issue, but it might be worth a shot? Here's the link:

I use this company a lot for spare parts... no complaints so far.

Cheers,
