MacBook Pro screen is black when turned on

So when I boot up my macbook the caps lock light turns on but not the backlit keyboard. I’m not sure if I can hear any fans. The screen stays black no matter what I do. It was working fine last night then wouldn’t wake up from sleep. I tried some things and got it to turn on eventually after about five hours. I’m not sure how though. Then I tried to install mac high sierra because I thought maybe it needed to be updated. It never finished updating and was stuck on that black screen again. Now I cannot get it to turn on again. Please help. Thanks.

Hi. To add to this. Sometimes if I hold down the power button to turn it on a screen shows a little folder with a question mark. but it does not always do this when it turns on. So I am at a loss.

Seems like a faulty SSD. Is it still under warranty?

Hi friends, sorry to finally get back to you. In the morning, I managed to finally get it to open in restore mode and reinstalled mac os. And shut down and turned on a few times successfully. But when I turn it on later, it didn't have the apple logo when it started up and was doing the black screen again....until it changed to the regular log in screen. I am worried it will start to do the black screen again. Do you think that means the SSD is faulty? I'm afraid to turn it off now, will I not be able to get it back on? I don't know.

The screens of retina macs and devices running latest iOS usually stays black if unable to load OSX unlike the older versions where it is a white screen. Intermittent black screen and signs of folder with question mark is an indication your mac is having trouble loading the OSX from your SSD storage. It seems like your SSD is not completely dead but unstable and already have some issues. Worse case your motherboard or logicboard is already having issues. You can run apple diagnostic test to confirm. Just follow the instructions listed here in their website. https://support.apple.com/kb/ph25696?loc...

Try to reset NVRAM/PRAM to boot your Mac

1. Shut down your Mac

2. Press the power button. Once you hear the startup chime, hold down CMND + OPT + P + R.

3. Hold these until you hear another startup chime, then release them.
