How do I turn on my iPod Touch after it fell in water?

Hi, my iPod Touch 5 fell in a pool about three years ago and it hasn’t turned on since. I want to turn it back on but it won’t. The only time I get a response is when I plug it in to a computer or outlet to charge and the low battery signal will show up signaling that it’s charging but it never turns on no matter how long I charge it. Also, when I plug it into my computer and turn on iTunes it never detects the device but it does with my working iPhone. I’ve tried holding down the power and home button for ten seconds, putting it in rice, and some other things. Does anyone have a solution for turning it back on?

At the very least, this device needs a new battery. That doesn’t mean the iPod will work though as water damage, especially after such a long period of time, can cause lots of issues with the logic board. Replacing the battery does require some soldering though so caveat emptor.

I would also do the following:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.
