The proper procedure to isolate the problem. iMac does not start

The computer has experienced a terrible fall, and the display is broken. So I removed the display and HDD and tried to plug in the power cord. The first test led on the motherboard is ON. Then I tried to switch it on but with no luck. No other test leds blinking, no fan.

I wonder what is the better way to resolve the further problem isolation.

Should it be able to start without builtin display when the external display is using?

UPDATE

So I did remove every secondary elements from iMac, the only motherboard and PSU left, checked the power button for continuity, but still without any success. iMac does not response to pressing the power button. Adding HDD, one RAM memory stick and external monitor via Thunderbolt didn’t change the picture. As far as I found out the meaning of these diagnostic leds is the following:

  • AC input voltage (trickle power present) power supply
  • DC output voltage
  • GPU is functioning
  • display panel is connected

So the first led can only tell that the AC power is presented. I hope I can do more the find the problem.

I had an older iMac with an MXM gpu(so it could be replaced) and i had the same issue, only one led. When i removed the gpu, the second led turned on, so it was a GPU error in my case. Sadly its not possible to test this in your case, but i'm guessing its related. The PSU looks ok, since the logic board gets 12V(this is what the first led means). I would suggest disconnecting everything you can(speakers, ssd, hdd, rams) and basically just leave your logic board connected to the PSU with a single fan and see if it spins when you turn it on, something might be damaged and creates a short on your logic board. But i believe its most likely a GPU issue.

Put the HD back in. Then using a USB keyboard reboot the system holding the T key this will allow you to hook up this system to another Mac in Target Disk Mode so you can see if you can even get to the system via a Thunderbolt cable.

How to use target disk mode to move files to another computer

If that fails then the system has deeper issues.
