Spilled half glass of water over my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

Hi!

This just happened to me, the moment the water touched the laptop it turned off (or maybe it just went normally into sleep mode… i’m not sure since i left it in standby for a while before tripping and dropping the glass of water over the keyboard)

I inmediately disconnected the magsafe connector and keep the macbook upside down. I could see that there were some water on the rear vent so I opened the back of it and dried it out with a paper towel (the back cover was a bit wet too) but the mainboard seems to be fine. I disconnected the battery and checked under the DVD drive to see if there was any water, but it was all dry.

I still haven’t turned it on. I’ll leave it with the battery disconnected and the back opened for at least 24hs.

What do you recommend me to do before I try to turn it on again?

If it doesn’t work i can either try to repair it myself (I do have the basic electronic tools so i can check voltages, solder, etc. ) or maybe try to source a broken machine with a working motherboard I can swap with mine, or even try to find a recommended unauthorized tech that has the right tools to diagnose it more thoroughly . I must say that I’m from Argentina, that does complicate things a bit too. (finding spare parts, a good tech service, etc.)

Thanks!

First and foremost resist the temptation to turn it on to see if it works before having followed this great guide:

MacBook water damage - The definitive guide

After removing logic board, take a very close look to see where the water reached and take good note of affected areas, it might serve you later in case the board doesn’t start after proper cleaning, especially if you see there are burn signs.

If it was just water, use a hair dryer to dry out your system. The faster the water evaporates the better! Just don’t over do it!

I would take the logic board out as there’s likely water under it.

Not a very good idea, unless water was a pure mineral free distilled water. Whether is water, milk or orange juice it doesn't make any difference..what hurts electronics are minerals diluted in liquids and letting them dry in place creates a thin conductive mineral layer that corrodes and eventually kills components.

@arbaman - Did you read what he had done? "I could see that there were some water on the rear vent so I opened the back of it and dried it out with a paper towel (the back cover was a bit wet too) but the mainboard seems to be fine. So the only risk is whats under the logic board and the keyboard. If he cleans up the logic board with a towel and uses the hair drier that will be all thats needed.

Its more than just the type of water its how quickly you react. If you've blotted it up & dried it to bone dry (water alone) then it should be fine,

If it was sitting then you're right! And if it was anything else than tap water then that to would need deeper cleaning.

A logic board might reach an operating temperature of 70+C. very easily. Water dries almost at sight and when one dries liquid residues, minerals are already sitting there. Unless one wants to take the risk, standard procedures are there to help minimize future problems as much as possible.
