Phone unresponsive after torn flex cable, does this make sense?

Screen replacement surgery on iPhone 7 plus. First surgery went well, home button did not work, which forum explains theories why, thanks all. Then went back in and did another surgery, awkwardly maneuvering now 5 hours in , and broke that light proximity flex cable thingy. Said okay, may work, just no camera, not end of world. Now can't get the phone up. Plug in for several minutes and still no Apple sign or any lights, total darkness. So question, is that a game changer to have that cable break? Would that stop the phone from booting up and lighting up, so I can see icons? Purpose of phone currently is just to extract some files, owner does not want to make calls on it. I had repaired a couple in family Ipads way back, but this iPhone business seems trickier, maybe. Is the game getting more tricky or is it just me? All I want is the phone to light up, see icons, if home button is dead as some say in the forum due to whatever reason, then I can switch the artificial intelligence setting and go from there. The first surgery then in a lot of ways was a success!!! I was just too stupid to know it. I should not have reopened the heart of the phone and gone back in, apparently. So live and learn... I'm not a professional at this, just try to fix stuff as family stuff breaks... Any tips would be helpful. Just surprised that that flex cable would have anything to do with the phone booting up, powering up. I old ipads you could work on them practically blindfolded and they were very forgiving, when I did not have the right tape I duck taped the ipad together to my tweens chagrine, but yeah, it worked fine. Just looked distressed, he's a trend setter, I joked... Oh, well. Live and learn... Any help on this would be appreciated... thanks all!

A torn flex can cause a short, besides the component on the end of it not working properly. I've torn a few of them, and it seems to cause different symptoms each time. Out of those times, I've only had the phone function properly with a damaged flex cable once.

I'd recommend removing it completely and seeing if that will let you boot back up. I've never tried it with a 7, but with other models the phone will basically function (obviously minus the functionality of the flex components) without the flex cable attached.

Do not throw it away! If (when?) you get a replacement cable it will come completely flat, and while it's possible to fold it up based on pictures from the internet - it's a lot easier to fold it when you have a factory-example right next to it.

Also, if you want to keep working on iPhones you might want to look at getting a heat gun (or borrow a hair drier) to soften up the adhesive on the front flex cable and the home button before you try and remove it. Heat from the front of the screen / the glass, and not the back / not directly heating the components
