You could try a replacement earspeaker. However if that doesn't work, then consider the possibility that your phone suffers from the Audio IC issue.

The iPhone 7 series of devices have proven to be very unreliable, suffering from flex-based issues similar to the iPhone 6 Plus (Touch Disease). On the iPhone 7, the fault line runs along the top of the SIM card reader and affects the Baseband CPU and Audio IC. Any short copper traces running perpendicular to the fault line while connecting to micro-BGA pads, is subject to failing.

Here are the typical audio related symptoms, as collated by the repair community:

  1. Voice Memos app / Loudspeaker on call - greyed out
  2. Siri doesn’t hear you / Caller can’t hear you
  3. Most other Audio related issues that aren’t solved by modular replacements

This can be repaired via a micro-soldering repair but always rule modular solutions first.

This question specifically relates to ear speaker. Is there something that I'm missing that would fix an ear speaker issue by replacing the loudspeaker? Would love any updates on this. I get 3-4 customers a month coming in with ear speaker too quiet issues (specifically with the 7 Plus and 8 Plus models), and I've just been swapping them out. Seems like they get clogged internally. External cleanings help but it's never back to the original volume.

Hey Joshua, thanks for pointing that out. It was probably just a mistype (this is an old answer after all) so I corrected it. It doesn't really change the nature of the answer though, as you say, trying a replacement earspeaker is the first step.

Hey, I had this problem myself.

The way I solved this was by first removing the earpiece (see ifixit for how to). Then remove the gauze by removing the inside of the earpiece. There was a lot of dirt here so the sound didn't come through enough.

You can remove the gauze by first removing the cable from the camera and sensors. Then using the metal tab to push up (see picture)

Then you have to clean the gauze with an old toothbrush. It is best that you also clean the gauze that is still attached to the screen.

Then you have to assemble everything again as you would assemble the speaker. Don't forget to put the gauze back in first.

Good luck, I hope it helps

For me it worked perfectly, sounds like new!

Hi, will removing the gauze void any ip ratings? (Make it prone for water entering the phone)
