New SSD now recognized as a startup disk

I have a new Samsung EVO 850 500 GB SSD and was able to partition and install the OS, but it won't be found as a startup disk.

It's connected externally through one of the USB ports, And I'm able to do everything in disk utility as expected. Tried creating a new partition, verifying, and repairing the disk, then installing OS, but it still won't be recognized.

My old hard drive crashed, and I figured I could do a clean installation of the SSD before I try to recover the HDD

So when you go to the Startup Disk control panel you don’t see it listed, is that correct with it being accessed via USB.

You’ll need to reformat the drive and this time you need to pick GUID/Journaled file system and then do the OS install again. <Sorry>

But! You may have a very different problem with your hard drive issue (or if you’ve moved the SSD into the system)! One of the issues in this series is the HD SATA cable breaks down so what you’ll like a drive crash is really a bad cable! Here’s the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and here’s the IFIXIT guide to put it in: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody 中期2012 硬盘线缆替换. Now in addition in replace the cable you’ll want to put some electricians tape down on the uppercase where the cable rests as the rough aluminum case wears the cable. Also don’t over bend the folds as the deep crease will damage the thin foil wires in the ribbon.

Once you’ve replaced the cable you’ll want to do a fresh backup of your drive as the worn cable could have left some corruptions. Then reformat and do a fresh OS install, then recover your TimeMachine backup.

I've tried reformatting the drive to mac OS journaled and tried installing the OS using a USB, internet recovery, and from the menu when you boot holding command+R. The install goes fine but will never show up as a bootable drive

So yo have the SSD is mounted where the HD was is that correct?

I have it connected to a SATA to USB cable. If I connect it internally, it doesn't read at all, which makes me think the stock SATA cable has stopped working as well.
