FaceTime mic working, video call not working.

Hi,

My phone has a strange problem. When I video call with FaceTime, the other side can hear me. When I use another app like Whatsapp or Messenger, and I call with video, the other side can't hear me. The mic is not working.

What could be the problem?

There are 3 microphones in the iPhone.

  • The bottom microphone is for Voice Memo and phone calls. The other microphones serve as error cancellation
  • The (top) front microphone is used for FaceTime calls, Siri and selfie videos with the front camera (FCAM). The top back microphone serves as error cancellation
  • The (top) back microphone is used for videos with the rear camera (RCAM). The top front microphone serves as error cancellation

Make sure you update your device to the latest version of iOS and then try to isolate which microphone is not working properly by trying each individual microphone with the related apps above. If the issue affects more than one microphone, then it could be the Audio Codec IC on the logic board.

Anything at the logic board level will require micro-soldering so you would need to find a repair shop that offers those services.

Those apps may be using a different microphone. Test all three, as detailed above to see if any microphones are failing. If they are good, try deleting the apps and re-installing them.

I have got the same problem with my iPhone 6s. Even in the beginning FaceTime video has no outgoing voice which is now working, but as mentioned in this chat. Other party app like google duo, whatsapp video call the recipient is not able to hear the voice. Even Siri does not take command by voice.. is this microphone problem or software issue

I dropped my phone and the audio for FaceTime,videos on snapchat and other things are not working but regular camera videos are working fine with audio. I NEED ANSWERS

I have the same problem with my iPhone 6 plus latest iOS with automatic updates turned on for all app’s.

On FaceTime the microphone works fine but on Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp is not working.

The iPhone was erased, cleaned. All the app’s mentioned here have permissions activated in settings for microphone and camera. The tests were made both on wifi and cellular data.

Each audio and video recording made with Voice Memos, Telegram , Facebook Messenger are ok all the microphones works on local recording. That means all the microphones are ok as hardware condition.

The iPhone loose microphone sound routing only in internet connection streaming. Why i tell that “loose the sound routing”? Because when i start a Facebook Messenger audio call, the receiver can hear me only if i press Speaker icon but i can’t hear him when the Speaker button is on (like the walkie-talkie).

From this i can understand:

  • the local audio and video recording use a single microphone which work’s fine (possible buttom or front);
  • the FaceTime use the same microphone which work’s fine like in local recordings;
  • the Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp use a microphone that can be in bad condition? May be the Rear Microphone between the main camera and flashlight led on the backcover of the iPhone?
  • can be a iOS driver or coding issue and not hardware?
  • The iPhone main camera (back camera) has a small blur given by autofocus sometimes.

When i will have some time I will make a video with the iPhone issue and i will update my post here.

Apple unlike other mobile companies are making these small small problems to your old iPhone so that you people buy latest iphones.

They insert these problems to your phones in their new software updates so that you discard the old phones and buy new one.
