screen comes on and then off

Hi. My Tbolt 27" has been working for a few hours and then a black screen shows. After a few resets the screen comes on and then off, and back again, and again, Now it does not turn on at all. It powers up too, and the USB and speaker work 100%. My local computer shop (Apple accredited - I think!) said that I need a new circuit power supply (backlight), €399+TAX, and they KEEP the existing LCD. Why? Hmmm! I have seen many comments with the same problem but managed to repair at a very low cost orby easily taking the display apart.

It could be:

The power cord;

The all-in-one cable, USB cable, Power cord to MacBook and square-shaped cable which shares the display with the MacBook;

If, with your help, I can manage to fix it, I will go back to the shop and make a complaint. I took a smaller MAC screen a few years back, on/off was broken = €300 +TAX price. I didn't fix and let them keep it. I regret to have done that.

Any help, please...Thank you everyone for the attention and hopeful help.

They keep the LCD? That's not a question, that's an answer for you. It simple says they are planning on stealing a high dollar part from you. Stay away from these thieves!

Please give us your model number from the bottom of the stand.

The PSU is probably all you need:

27" Apple LED Cinema Display 250W Power Supply

Item #: 661-6048 1011969

Replacement, 27" Apple LED Cinema Display 250W Power Supply

Here's one at Amazon for $105

I wouldn't bother going back to the shop. All they are going to do is deny they were trying to steal your LCD. Even if they were not, the proper order for repairing this is the power supply first.

Before you spend any money thy these possible fixes:

Power Cycle for 30 Seconds

Thunderbolt-Display-RearShut down and disconnect both your Mac and Thunderbolt Display from AC power for at least 30 seconds.

Disconnect the Thunderbolt Display's MagSafe cable from your Mac.

Disconnect the Thunderbolt Display from AC power by unplugging the cord.

Disconnect all USB peripherals and any cables plugged into the Thunderbolt Display.

Wait at least 30 seconds before powering on your Mac and Thunderbolt Display.

Reset Your Mac's SMC

SMCIntel-based Macs have a System Management Controller (SMC) that can be reset as a possible fix for Thunderbolt Display issues.

These instructions are for Mac notebooks with non-removable batteries.

Shut down the Mac.

Plug in a MagSafe or USB-C power adapter to a power source and to your computer.

On the Mac's built-in keyboard, press the left side Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button simultaneously.

Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

Press the power button to turn on the Mac.

Apple provides steps for Macs with removable batteries, and the Mac Pro, iMac and Mac mini, on its support website.

On Macs with MagSafe power adapters, the cable's LED might change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Reset Your Mac's NVRAM or PRAM

NVRAMNVRAM, short for "non-volatile random-access memory," stores certain settings even when your Intel-based Mac is turned off. On older Macs, it is known as PRAM.

Shut down the Mac.

Turn on the Mac.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.

Hold these keys until the Mac restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.

Release the keys.

After resetting NVRAM, you may need to reconfigure the Mac's settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information.

Thunderbolt-Cable

Use a Standalone Thunderbolt Cable

Try connecting a standalone Thunderbolt cable between your Mac and Thunderbolt Display. If this resolves the issue, then possibly your Thunderbolt Display's dual MagSafe-Thunderbolt cable is damaged.

Thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately I do need to go back, but to collect it. They sent me the repair cost by e-mail. I didn't reply, declining their offer as it crossed my mind that they would get in there and take valuable pieces. Thank you very much for your advice, As soon as I get it home, I will try all your suggestions.

Thank you again.

Your advice paid off, but to an extent. Shift+Ctrl+Alt & ‘on’ button worked. I even tried switching on/off a few times. It successfully started every time following your instructions, the display was on for about 4 to 5 hours but suddenly went off. I wasn’t able to get it back on. I sent my MAC to be fixed (for another reason) and once I got it back (about 3 days being fixed) the display came on straight away. But now it’s off (after a good few hours on!). On both instances, it happened when the power Magsafe cable came from the display. When it did work, I originally turned it on using the MAC’s power cable (about half-way through I switched the Magsafe cable to the displays’). Do you think it is the 27” Apple LED Cinema Display 250W Power Supply? FYI my display series # is 2A0441ND6JL.

Again any help would be valuable.

Thanks

Just changed the icon to the correct display. Now, you've sent it in to be fixed again? I'm getting confused.

Hi. No, my MacBook had to be fixed, nothing to do with the display (I took it to a different place). When I got it back, plugged everything as advised and the display worked perfectly. After having it a few hours on it switched off and haven't managed to get it on again.
