Should have said external hard drive. I want to use it for backups so I don't lose everything again...

Rich, how exactly do u have this external connected to your Mac? Is it via firewire? USB hub? The Mac's native USB ports? If it is USB powered external encloser please trey a powered USB Hub, or try both USB ports on the Mac and report back.
