Huskee LT4200 briggs & stratton 16.5 hsp lawnmower. It wont start because it is stuck in gear. We kept working with it and finally got it unstuck. Mower started. When we went to put it in gear mower shut off. Now mower is still in gear and it doesnt start in gear. Has anyone else ever had this problem or anyone have any suggestions as to where i need to start at to try to fix this problem?

Stuck in gear? Are you referring to the PTO Lever (Blade Engage)?

According to your user's manual, the Safety Interlock system works as follows:

1.) It will prevent the engine from cranking or starting unless the parking brake is engaged, and the PTO lever is in the disengaged position.

2.) The engine will automatically shut off if the operator leaves the seat before engaging the parking brake.

3.) The engine will automatically shut off if the operator leaves the tractor's seat with the PTO lever in the engaged position, regardless of whether the parking brake is engaged.

4.) The engine will automatically shut off if the PTO lever is moved into the engaged position with the shift lever in Reverse.

Assuming "stuck in gear" means the PTO lever, I would first check the seat safety switch. It may be the mower thinks the operator is not in his seat when the PTO lever is engaged, see point 3.) above. Here is a test: Get the gear "unstuck" and cranked like you did before, but do NOT put it "in gear". Then, while sitting in the seat, disengage the Parking Brake. If the engine cuts off, then you have recreated point 2.) above. Now, the only common denominator of points 2.) and 3.) is the seat safety switch.

Make sure both wires are firmly connected to the seat safety switch and free of corrosion. Then, check for continuity across the switch when depressed with a voltmeter (http://en-us.fluke.com/training/training...). If no continuity, then replace the switch.

Now as far as getting the gear unstuck... Again assuming you mean the PTO lever, I would clean off and lube the idler pulley. When you engage/disengage the PTO, a pulley is moved into position to tighten/loosen the belt which engages/disengages the blades. The pulley that moves is your idler pulley. Clear it of any debris, spray the idler pulley and any brackets attached to it with WD-40, let it sit for a bit, and then try working the PTO lever back and forth. Hopefully, this will loosen it up for you.
