adhesive in repair kit not working well

I replaced the digitizer and screen for an ipad Air using one of the IFixIt kits, and it all worked well except there is one area on the right side near where the digitizer cables are located that doesn't appear to be adhered as well as it could be. When you push down on the edge you can hear the adhesive stick and then eventually a bit later it will unstick with a small clicking sound. Is there a liquid adhesive I could use by pulling up on the glass a bit and injecting underneath in that one little area? With a syringe-type applicator or something similar? Thanks.

Well that was an abject failure. The digitizer has what looks like bubbles in it, almost like when you get dust underneath a screen protector. I think when I nudged the cable off the ledge, it disconnected from the strip on the digitizer. I don't think there's any coming back from that....

That's a pretty common issue when using the stock adhesive that is pre-applied to the digitizer.

Here are a few general Best Practices when installing an iPad digitizer.

  1. You have to properly clean the previous adhesive from the housing. You can use IPA or Acetone to soften up the adhesive, and then scrape away most of it with a flat tool (be careful of the inner flexes and components). I follow that with a solvent imbued wipe to clean the rest off. I like to finish with an IPA wipe and some techs like to use an adhesive Primer.
  2. Remove the pre-installed adhesive on the digitizer. You can also remove the adhesive residue on the digitizer but you have to be careful of not getting the inside surface of the digitizer smudged with solvents and fingerprints. Hopefully you kept the thin protective sheet on the digitizer up to this point.
  3. Make sure the flexes are properly sitting within the device, as even the tiniest amount of pressure will eventually cause the adhesive to let go of the digitizer.
  4. Finally, these adhesive are pressure-activated so you need to apply pressure. You can stack some books on the iPad to get an even pressure distribution.

The actual adhesive matters also. I find that the pre-installed adhesive is generally low quality and doesn't stick as well as a high quality adhesive, such as the Tesa 61395 Tape you can find here on iFixit or pre-cut 3M tape from Bowler-Tech, which is what I use.

I guess you could use a bit of B7000 glue

Yep good answer, this is what I generally tend to use, I also put a bit of scotch tape at that area to let the glue set in place then remove it 8 hours or a day later.

I also recommend using this glue, but be sure to have some weight to the phone (with some books), or add tape like Ben said, to ensure a complete seal.

I just ordered some of that, so thanks.

In my experience, in the cable area, its usually because the cables are not tucked in properly and will usually result in pinched/severed cables. Please take care to make sure the cables are moved into the proper position before applying too much pressure. Also please don't use glue, it makes future repairs extremely difficult. Tessa Double Sided red tape works wonders as well.

Thanks. I took another look at it, and it did look like one of the cable fold protectors (I think that's what they are?) was a bit into the ledge of the metal back casing. I was able to give it a nudge with a pick and reclose it. I'm hoping I didn't kill the adhesive. As for "future" repairs, it's an original Air that is probably going on obsolete, but I'm hoping to not need to open it up again.

You did exactly what I would've done. Glad I was able to point you in the right direction! Cheers and good luck on your future repairs as a blooming DIY'er!
