Backlight repair screen replacement broke my MacBook

Block Image

Last week my screen went black, upon further investigation I could still connect it up to an external monitor and I could see the screen when a flashlight was shined on it.

Took it into apple where they noted a backlight error and offered an LCD screen replacement under consumer law.

Was using laptop with external monitor up to the day I handed it in for repair and other than the whole lighting up issue on the screen, the laptop worked perfectly!

Today once I collected it, they said there is an issue with the logic board due to water damage. However, from my handing it in yesterday to collecting it this morning, now there is no start up, I cannot connect it to an external monitor, the keyboard lights do not work and the mouse trackpad does not click.

I have been told that they are not accepting any responsibility due to water damage found, despite it working to an extent when I handed it in.

I find it very unlikely that it just went from bad to worse naturally. Had I not handed it in, I feel as though it would have continued to work connected to an external screen.

Is there anything I can do? I don't doubt there is water damage, however I've only had this for a year and a half and explicitly remember nothing ever being spilt. Therefore I feel as though any water damage couldn't be sufficient enough to have caused such an issue overnight!

Logic boards are repairable. Don't let apple tell you otherwise. Hard to say if it has water damage or not as i'd have to see the whole board under the microscope to tell. As far as "Backlight error" There is no test that tells you if backlight is working or not software wise. You have to put a meter on the board and Apple does not do that.

Given the fact that it was worse off when you got it back, the whole "Liquid damage" is probably apple covering their screwup. I take liquid damage devices apart all the time and they never not start up from me reassembling it. They messed something up. Simple as that.

You can try disassembling the machine, pulling the board out and posting pics so I can get a better look, but if you don't feel comfortable that is fine.

Not much you can do for board repair without microsoldering equipment.

Hi, thank you very much for your response, I have attached the photo that I was sent by Apple, showing the water damage. Is it likely that this has caused the issues described? Even the trackpad issue?

That is minor but could defiantly do it. Trackpad could be related to USB and that issue is probably on the other side of the board. Given the corrosion, this defiantly got liquid

Yes I wondered if the water damage was small because I cannot remember ever spilling anything on it! I think even if Apple has or hasn't caused any damage themselves, they are hiding behind the liquid damage excuse.

Considering the initial issue was the backlight not working, how easy would this have been to fix? Is it likely at all that overnight or by opening up the laptop the condition could have deteriorated to this?

Store Manager has denied any responsibility due to the liquid damage, so I don't know what else to do to explain my case.

Apple themselves will tell you this is unrepairble and you need a new board because somehow liquid damage is the end of the world. The inital issues would have been easy regardless if you have the skills. Could be the screen, or could be the board. Without seeing what they screwed up inside I am not sure. No booting could be a number of things. No backlight usually isn't hard to solve at all with your existing board.

The same thing happened to me a few months ago, if you pay attention it does has small sings of water damage, as you can see in the right upper corner there are small spots of mold and corrosion. Unfortunately, apple will not repair it as. it is stated it in the company policy and getting a new one is gonna be expensive. What I did was send it to this company techsave and they where able to repair it and it barely cost anything compared with apple. You should send them and email and see what they say

Here I am leaving the website if you want to take a look!

I can see some signs of water damage on that picture, especially the corrosion. Try using a toothbrush with isopropyl alcohol on the board to remove the corrosion, or using que tips. If that doesn’t fix it, and the display replacement didn’t help, then you need a new logic board.

Hope this helps!
