I was thinking of replacing the face buttons with pink rather than orange, and then making a custom top shell. Can't really find any 2ds-specific buttons, so I was wondering if they're the same size as other 3ds models. I figure that they are, but it's best to check. Thanks.

No they are different unfortunately, the little notches on the edges of the buttons which ensure they are seated in the right hole on the housing and the right way up are different.
Not sure about the rest of the profile such as the height and diameter of the button (they look very similar if not the same). You might be able to mod a set of 3DS XL buttons to fit by cutting new notches on the side so they fit the 2DS XL housing.
The notches are not visible from the outside so cosmetically if you can mod them to fit the holes in the housing they should look perfect once fitted.
