My audio works on the controller, but the mic doesn't. Why?

Hey. So recently I have taken apart both my Xbox one s controllers to spray paint them. They worked fine immediately after, but recently both of them have broke. One of the controllers audio and mic doesn't work, and only the audio works for the other. Currently I am using the HyperX cloud headset (https://www.amazon.com/HyperX-KHX-H3CLW-...). I am also using an adapter because the headset has both an audio and mic jack. I have checked the audio module in the controllers and they both seem fine. I'll greatly appreciate any answers.
