System doesn't recognize Samsung EVO SSD

I want to install a new drive in my MacBook Pro. I chose the Samsung EVO 250 GB.

To install I followed these steps:

  • Connecting the SSD with a SATA cable to my Mac. Using disk utility, erase the SSD. Clicked on GUID partition and MacOS extended (journaled).
  • With carbon copy cloner I cloned my old hard drive to the SSD, including the reboot option. I then installed the new SSD in my system,

But when I turn it on it only shows the white screen of death. When I start up with cmd+r and go to disk utility, the SSD does not show up.

What did i do wrong? I hope someone can help me out!

Thanks in advance.

I would recommend you stick with Sierra. High Sierra has some issues still with SATA based SSD's with the newer APFS High Sierra automatically upgrades the drive to.

reformat the drive & install the system. The do not clone (destroys the repair partition). Use migration Assistant to move your user and apps.

@danj absolutely , and the 2012 model cable.

Here's the details, follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and this is the better cable: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable. I also recommend placing some electrical tape on the uppercase where the cable rests as the aluminum abrades the cable

@piera , I can almost guarantee that you either have a damaged SATA cable, or a defective Samsung SSD Drive.

I am running this config with High Sierra fine.

Also, there is no reason to use CCC to clone.

The built in migration wizard on a clean install will take care of anything.

The only thing you may need to do is re-enter installation keys for applications like MS Office.

I would still stick with the older Sierra OS @avanteguarde I'm still running the beta releases and they are still having issues with queueing with the Finder process. Don't get wrong I do think the new file system is better! But not at the risk of not being able to save a file without needing to wait a good 30 sec. or more depending on what else I have running concurrently. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) doesn't have this issue.

@danj I am in no way disputing the OS. Just saying the drive works great! :-)

@avanteguarde - And I'm using a Samsung 850 EVO in my system too! ;-} Great Drive!

I am also running the 500gb Samsung Evo SSD - after installing I had an identical issue. It was indeed the SATA cable. -- Went ahead and installed the new SATA cable, and the system works very well - and significantly better than it did with the old crappy HDD.

Also, I am running High Sierra and everything is fully operational.

Best of luck in fixing your issue brother!
