Messed up colors on external display

When I connect my MBP through a minidisplay to vga adapter to my external vizio 26" monitor the colors become messed up. Black is green or blue and there is general static on the scree. How do I fix this?!?!

Yesterday, I went to the apple store and bought a mini display to VGA adapter and now it works great. So, I think that it was the adapter but thanks for all the help I really appreciate it!

I find this happens when the plug isn't properly secured sometimes. But I am sure you have already tried that by now....

Try another monitor if you can and see if you get the same thing.

If you see this happening on other monitors, then you want to figure out if it's the adapter or the actual mini-display port on your computer.

If you have access to another VGA > mini DP adapter, then absolutely check to see if you can cancel out the adapter as the problem.

Component isolation is your first step. good luck!

Make sure your monitor's settings are set to RGB and not something like YPBPR.
