Damaged (3) plug: leading to earpiece/motion sensor problems?

Hello everyone! I need troubleshooting with an iPhone 3GS with a dead battery I was given.

I had to disassemble it to swap out a new battery, but while re-plugging the connector labeled (3) I tore away the top right corner of the plastic tab it slides in. The phone still works, but I'm having troubles with the earpiece, motion sensor, compass and proximity sensor. Is this problem related to that connector or is it just something different?

Soldering a new plug is something I just don't want to risk doing*, is there a way to "ghetto fix" it (tape, some foam spacer to restore pressure...)?

*How hard is it, really?

Thanks for your time, any help is MUCH appreciated! :)

if it's your motion sensor / accelerometer try this.. has a link for the part. Cannot go into landscape mode - faulty accelerometer?

you could also try removing apps that need the motion sensor... ie car/driving games etc which may be corrupt . if it's jailbroken then remove apps one by one that you've downloaded from cydia.

try a restore from backup on itunes..

Parrapaman, you are not the first one. Check for lots of Q&A on ifixit and see what you make out of it. fpc connector number 3 repair is one of them LCD Display cable nr 1 & 3 is a really good suggestion from pollytintop who is obviously very knowledgeable about iPhones. Ruined the connector #3 and cannot hear my correspondents was what I found out earlier about that issue. Anyway, good luck to you and ket us know how you are progressing.

Hi, thanks for your answer, I did read those posts, but no one addresses the motion sensor problem, all of them refer to that broken plug to be the source only to the earpiece and proximity sensor issues. Do you know if it has anything to do with the motion sensor and compass? And is there any way I could fix it without resorting to some extremely fine soldering?

Connector # 1 : LCD Display

Connector # 2 : Touch Screen Digitizer

Connector # 3 : Ear Piece Speaker, Proximity and Ambient Light Sensor

Connector # 4 : Charge Port, Home Button, Antennae, Microphone and Speakerphone

the home button has it's own contacts that connect when the device is closed, it isn't fed through ribbon cable 2. I think ;-)

About how to fix it try pollytintops solution with the tape and the foam, if you do not like to fix it permanently :-)LCD Display cable nr 1 & 3

Yep, the home button has two contact pads beneath it, thus is independent. I just don't know if motion sensor and compass depend on anything besides the chip integrated on the motherboard... :-\

Parrappaman, can you post a pic of the #3 connector? I can tell you whether or not it will work. Sometimes if its slightly chipped, you can get a good secure connection. Other times your at a loss can it needs to be replaced with a new one. More info on my site if you need, or feel free to ask me here.
