System shuts down randomly. Have tried reset SMC/NVRAM and a lot more

Random shutdowns (grep I is "previous shutdown cause -128")

But NOT in safe mode! In safe mode, machine runs for days. did all resets, new user, new OS-X install.

  • Disconnected: SSD, Trackpad, Uppercase, I/O board, Battery.
  • Also tried measuring temperatures on CPU
  • Also tried SMCFanControl to keep machine cool, to no avail.

HELP! And please dont tell me to go to the Apple genius bar, they just say new MLB but I refuse to accept that.

Lets collect a fresh log file of the crash often it will tell you what failed. But, you first need to clear out the old logs so we don't get lost in all of the old junk.

Open 'Console' and delete the current log file in safe mode. Then restart in normal mode, once the system crashes save the log file as a Pages file and attach in in your Question (edit mode)

I must warn you we may find the logic board has a problem that will either need someone with the skills and tools to fix or Gulp! A new logic board is needed.

Can you give us some background here. Did you have a liquid spill into the system or sit it down on a wet surface? Did you drop it or bang it hard?

Thank you very much Dan! for your input, I have been sifting through so many log files in the console now and I could never pinpoint the shutdown causes or if there was any indication of malfunctioning hardware. Finally I tried systematically to remove extensions, one by one and finally at some point (I had aparantly then removed some extensions that control the light level on the screen (I am not able to turn down the light but for me it is a small price to pay for a working machine - another extension, that I presume runs the camera, was also turned off, so no camera :-( albeit I would rather have funcioning machine (and it really does run nicely :-) ) than having to pay for a new MLB. Again thank you very much for your input and thank you to this forum, for being so excellent :-)

This reminds me of the game Jenga.

I wish you hadn't done that as I'm not sure you are dealing with a software driver issue. If you were I would have recommended backing up the drive, then wiping it clean and installing a fresh OS.

I still think your approach is too extreme a process as you're expecting the last thing you pull will be the bad software. Then what??

How about rebooting your system resetting everything back, clear the log files as I only need one, then let it crash once more! Then paste the log file here for us to review. While I can't promise I'll catch the problem, I'm sure it won't take as long as your approach.

Hi Dan :-) sorry for the late response, maybe I didn´t mention this but I allready tried fresh install several times and even to an external drive. I even booted the machine via taget mode from others machines, also woth noting is that during the install, once the OSX is installed and the machine (presumably) boots WITH extensions, to finish the installation (creating a user and so on) the problem allready occurs. So foregive my boldness/arrogance but I am quite certain that it is malfunctioning hardware and my only option (couldn´t afford MLB replacement) seemed to be to "disable" the hardware that was malfunctioning by removing extensions - machine has been running perfectly since then (albeit I can´t use the control for brightness of the screeen and the camera but that seems a tradeoff I am willing to endure).

I'm still looking for that log file ;-}

OK I get it! You thought pulling the driver/s would stabilize your system by deactivating the hardware which has failed (in your eyes).

But, you haven't really ID'ed the failing hardware and it could be a minor issue! A clean log file should help us ID the bad boy! Or you could try the built-in diagnostics.

Having something to work off will help us help you! We still need a bit of background as well did you bang the system or get it wet some how?

I'm not 100% but as far as I remember Apple have a quality program on this model and the 2012 for same GPU issues and they doth have tendency's of randomly restarting or multiple colours on the display.

so my recommendation is check with apple you may get a replacement logic-board for free under the GPU quality program.

Agreed! This is the most likely issue. I had two systems which I needed to send in but that was over a year ago both are working fine now.

If I check my coverage here:

https://checkcoverage.apple.com

I see I'm no longer covered: Repairs and Service Coverage: Expired

Although I'm not sure wether this also goes for mentioned 'MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues', Do you know?

a 'Repair Extension Program' is above and beyond your standard AppleCare warranty coverage. You'll need to get your self to an Apple Store or Apple authorized service center to get it fixed. If you can't get to either you can also ship the system in to Apple. Give them a call to open a repair ticket and point them to the note above. This is a free repair!

@danj sorry for trying to get an answer through here but I think I have the same problem as the original poster. the only difference is my computer restarts randomly (instead of only shutting down). By the way when I login right after the restart I DON'T get any message (I'm thinking about the usual "your computer had to restart because of a problem" message)

My computer is a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, for RAM it has 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, and for GPU an NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB and Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB.

I haven't tried anything besides resetting NVRAM and SMC. If you have the time to help me I'd like to try the route you've suggested of sharing the log file before anything else.

If that's possible just let me know what log file exactly is the one I would have to share.

Thank you!

@geronimo55925 - This Question is quite a few years old now. I think the best thing is to create a fresh question so you get a bit more visibility.

Given your systems age you might want to check your battery as they only have about four years of life.
