New battery doesn't work
I took my phone apart as directed put new battery in and nothing no life...tried charging for several minutes and again nothing. Had to put in the old battery which won't hold charge for very long and phone works.

It seems like you might have received a faulty battery. I would try another one!!

How do you recalibrate a battery on an iPhone. Are there software diagnostic tools like Coconut Battery for the Mac? How is the phone being charged and on what?
Coconut Battery works for iOS as well! If phone is not coming on it wont read it unless you have a battery reader, fairly expensive ($300 range). BUT Mayer has a great point. You can plug your phone with your old battery, download coconut battery and make sure you go to the iOS option on the top right. If battery life is below 80% then it needs replacement and this might confirm the bad battery you received as a replacement. ---- Also, make sure to leave that replacement battery plugged in for a little while. Sometimes they drain and take a little bit to come on. -- Let us know, remember to not take broken as an answer!
