Minute hand stops intermittently after replacing battery

I have three $20 watches from two different manufacturers that all stopped working after I changed the battery. They all failed in the same way: After changing the battery, the second hand moves as expected, however, the minute hand will intermittently stop moving. In fact, if I get out a magnifying glass, I can see that the minute hand has stopped making small movements when the second hand ticks.

As far as I can tell, none of the hands are rubbing or interfering with each other.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong to break these watches by changing the battery?

Hi @kurmasz ,

Just verifying that you changed the battery like for like i.e. exactly the same "type number" and that you have measured the voltage supply on the "new" battery to ensure that it is as specified.
