Has anyone attempted to separate LCD from Glass Digitizer?

I know its been discussed already, so my question is Simple. I thought someone who had replaced the whole piece may have tried to see whether it was possible or not to separate the LCD from the broken glass.

I have seen both Digitizer and LCD alone for sale or ebay which made me think that they actually CAN be separated and replace only the glass or lcd, but people just like to go the easiest and safest way.

Thanks.

I plan on trying to replace the lcd alone in one of these soon, great site and thx to everyone for the topic and advise ^_^

Lots of people buy the separate parts and reassemble, then if they break one part in the future they don't have to buy the entire unit... just an idea. Your only problem is securing the 2 pieces...

Migue Ford, I don't think that all the great people on here who specialize in the iPhone repair "like to go the easiest and safest way." I bet some have even tried it and probably bend or destroyed their LCD's. Nobody said that it can not be done, all everyone says that it is difficult and cumbersome with a high degree of failure. Just because you can buy the piece separate does not mean that it is meant to be repaired like that. But you might just be on to something here and if you already have the pieces, why not give it a try and let us all know so that we can learn something new. Good Luck to you....

Yea makes sense, thanks for the good wishes. I will not attempt this because the iPod is not mine, and even tho is messed up, I dont wanna have to pay for it by trying to help someone if u know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean and personally think it is a wise decision to always replace it as a complete unit, not as cheap but pretty much guaranteed to work :)

what you mean is you can separate them but the part won't work? I tried with 2 last week...not doable, with patience or tools or anything.

Has anyone replaced just the glass and LCD instead of the whole unit?

I guess is a better option as if it happens again it'll be just a matter of replacing the glass alone as it wont be bonded (unless you did) to the LCD.

I never meant to use my current LCD. What I said was, buy both as separated units, LCD and Glass, then remove the current LCD with the broken glass and use the current frame with a new LCD and a new digitizer NOT bonded together.

Hi, I repair iphones, ipods, and many other devices for a living. I literally have a box stacked full of the broken lcd/digi's that we have repaired. We have tried many solutions and suggestions to separate them. Heat gun, oven, ect. It CAN be done, but the chances of you succeeding are very slim. The biggest problem is that your applying alot of heat to the LCD, and if you are to succeed in separating them the life span/integrity of the LCD is greatly shortened during the process.

Not to discourage you but thought id give my input. The LCD and Digitizer are fused together during the manufacturing process, the best method i have found is a heat gun and a low setting. It takes a lot of patience as they will not quickly separate. I start in a corner of the LCD with the thinnest blade you can find. Good luck, hope this helps.

It is possible to separate the screen from the lcd. All you need is a lcd separating machine.

dont do it, i tried last night and destroyed my digitizer!

the entire ipod is fragile and can be destroyed very easily. I took mine completely apart last night before is discovered I could not separate the glass from the digitizer. I ordered a new assembly on eBay and I am returning the lcd screen i bought. It was a waste of money. upon putting it back together i destroyed my digitizer from trying to heat the glass off. buy a whole assembly!

Its possible - Here's how we do it.

*This is more for repair stores, as the machines to remove the lcd from the digitizer is expensive*

So it is agreed that it might be possible, just not by the DIY'er?

It's not a possibility, but something that has already been done. Some of our DIY'ers have purchased our machines, only to change their hobby into a full-time job.

How about an iPhone 5? Can your machines separate the digitizer from the lcd on those?

完成的

Josiah Crook, to get an iPhone 5 lcd replacement is pretty cheap nowadays. Depending on the grade of parts you're looking for you can spend anywhere from $28-$50. I purchased a 5c lcd replacement last week and swapped screens out in about a half hour. But that is just due to my experience. The machines should separate that too. If you have the means to pay for one then you would pay scraps for the glass. You can always give it a try but also keep that whole replacement as a backup.

stick it in the oven, cant remember the temp think its about 280 C or somewhere close, it should be left for just long enough to melt the glue that holds them together but not long enough to melt the plastic, oh one tip, you may need to take the silver backing off, be very very careful with all steps, and dont forget its hot! you should then be able to slip in a very slim tool between lcd and digitiser, get any glue off the lcd while its hot as it will be almost impossible otherwise! but for what you are saving in money it is alot of hassle!

Hey dude! thanks for chiming in. Yea well Im gonna go for the white conversion and buy the whole screen together. However; my LCD is still intact and I will have no use for it, so.. its good for experiments! If I can successfully take the LCD off the pieces of shattered glass, put a new glass and make it work we all will know there actually is a way to do it.

The cheapest Ive found the whole unit is $83 while the glass alone is about $20. I cant yet afford the whole unit but if Id knew it can be done I do am able to get the glass.. so it may help somebody in the future if it does work.

完成的

follow up from above, although the screens separated at 280 C in an oven and initially worked, they have all started to trickle back with problems which i would only attribute to the separation! for the hassle time and trouble involved we no longer separate the screens as the complete units are now so much cheaper than they were that its not worth not buying them!

Hello, I found this post by searching for a new screen for my sons ipod, I was able to seperate the lcd from the digitizer in about 30 seconds. I used a little flat head screwdriver. i noticed on the outside edge of the lcd screen are 5 places that appear to be tabs, (they are not tabs, they hold the lcd to the backing) i slid the tip of the screwdriver under each of these "tabs" and twisted and they raised up. they are located on the outside of each of the 4 corners and one on the middle of one of th sides. After i did that I just slid the screwdriver in just a little bit and lifted, it comes off just like the front cover, it has a light adhesive holding it on but it comes off pretty easy. Hope this helps somebody.

I’ll pose yet another question to answer your question…

What will it cost and what mechanical knowledge is required to professionally separate digitizer glass from the LCD?

There are two scenarios:

1. You’ve damaged your digitizer screen and want to salvage the LCD. You want to defy everything that you’ve heard about botched screen extractions. You’ve purchased a digitizer screen and LCD, separately, from two different foreign companies. The neither foreign seller can offer you instruction or even instructional video on how to do the repair. They’ll just say: “it’s easy.” Right, buddy!

2. You’ve managed to come across a local company that has the proper equipment, but wait…

The parts cost you USD$30.00 altogether and the company that will fuse the parts together, properly, will want $20.00 to do it for you. Under the circumstances you should have simply purchased the digitizer/LCD full assembly and spared yourself the runaround and backflips.

Scenario #1: has a failure rate of 9.5 out of 10 attempts.

Do you really own the 10 iPhones that you'll inevitably brick?

If you just happen run or own a repair shop, you just bought yourself 9.5 new assemblies for those customers, because the LCD was not broken when you got it from them. Will you lie to save your skin?

Scenario #2: It’s unlikely that you’ll find a factory that will repair your piece, because they’re too busy doing large volume manufacturing and can’t be bothered. They’ve invested in various pieces of industrial equipment that you’d never see or use, unless you have several hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest in such a facility.

What’s in the factories that manufacturer these aftermarket iPhone parts?

ACF Tacking Machine $8,000.00

Liquid OCA Bonding Machine $5,000.00

Pre-bonding Machine, $6,000.00

Lamination Machine with Auto Alignment $12,000.00

Polarizer Attaching Machine $7,000.00

Polarizer Removal Machine $15,000.00

LCD Panel Polarizer Film (Sold by the sized sheet, price varies)

Engineers to do calibrations

Good luck with your .99 cents plastic removal and repair kit tool! You've been duped if you actually purchase such kit. They're sold all over the internet to unknowing, nieve and weary consumers, who are trying to save a buck with DIY, which is a wonderful ambition to have.

There are literally millions of online re-sellers of aftermarket parts that don't know much if anything at all about the products they sell and technical support is basically improvised. I'm sure that they'll keep selling the digitizer glass to consumers and make millions, but the consumer will always do a bad repair or unprofessional repair. When they sell the parts to a factory or manufacturer that actually has this equipment; that's a well-matched business relationship.

To sell these useless components is a SCAM! The irony is that the re-seller has no idea that there is a problem, so they'll keep selling them randomly and make millions. I almost purchased a digitizer glass myself, but when I asked the seller how to install it, he could not give a reasonable answer, but said " It's easy, just purchase it."

Fortunately I Googled and did my research. This is how I'm able to report my findings to you all, right here. I heart ifixit :)

I have tried to separate the two from each other with a heat gun and a pencil torch, the chances of not messing up the lcd trying to separate them are VERY VERY slim. believe me save your time and buy the two pieces already together, you will be happier that you did.

I found the best way is to hold it about a half foot away from the heat source, about 20 to 30 seconds will do. After you remove it slow start to peel the two pieces away (dont forget to remove the screws under the black tape on sides) 3 on oneside I think and 2 on the other

I havent tried it yet. But what heat source did you use? Im thinking on buying the LCD and Glass a separated units and just use the current screen frame, so if it happens again I could just replace the glass that time. Does it makes sense?

I would not reccomend this. Like Nick said, it can and probably will damage your LCD's life. I don't think it is worth the time and risk. Even if you did do this, adhesive is left behind and if you tried to fuse the LCD to a new digitizer, it wouldl look horrible. Just my advice. But I have tried it, just for fun. :)

I will buy a complete unit. But I want to try this with my current unit as I wont have no use for it after I replace it. Im not that dumb lol

If an LCD is successfully separated from its broken digitizer, how should it be prepared before attaching to a new digitizer? Should the old adhesive be removed, and if so, does anyone know of a solvent that would remove the adhesive but not damage the LCD?

Wayne I'd talk to the folks that say they have done it successfully and do it as a comment since you are posting as an answer right now :-)good luck

You can use an optical glue for securing. It's similar to what your dentist uses. Once applied you use a UV light to cure it. It's incredibly expensive and I only suggest using it on expensive LCD/Digitizers such as Samsung phones and iPhone 5.

previously, the simple answer is no. both lcd and digitisers are sold as a package. you have to replace both if one of it fails and you cannot separate the package.

However, new products came up recently, separating digitisers and lcd screens for ipod touch 4.

lcd screens, being more expensive, is rarely broken. it's the digitisers that is always shattered (seems that ipod is using cheap glass). knowing this, manufacturers starts splitting those items.

so the next time, god forbid, when your ipod screen shattered and you want to replace your lcd screen and digitiser, buy separate components (lcd & digitiser), instead of the old module (lcd stuck with digitiser). you can find a lot in ebay. so when the next time your digitiser OR lcd broken, you can replace one while maintaining the good one.

To Steven above,

you can buy digitiser, but please buy lcd screen too. the price is about the same with the old package. it's in the future, when you want to fix separate component, it will come in handy. the digitiser is not meant to be used with the old lcd.

hope this helps!

Any one who attempts to separate an iPod touch screen and digitizer must understand that there is a risk involved, I have had a few successes, but I can say that it takes an awful lot of work and patients and is very time consuming, firstly you need something very thin, I always use a screen protector, and a safe solvent, to start with you need to work the screen protector very gently in between the lcd and the digitizer, the gum in between the two can be loosened with adding small amounts of plain water, but again you need to be very careful not to alow the water to work it's way in between the four layers that make up the lcd, this can be very time consuming as the screen protector has to be worked down In between the two screens adding tiny amounts of water as you go very carefully and slowly, WD40 is a very effective solvent but can be very messy resulting in a time consuming clean up of the screen afterwards, the question you have to ask yourself is, is it worth so much effort, as there is a 40 % chance of success, and I only do this as a last resort
