Why does my mac take so long to boot up?

Everything comes up on the desktop but for a few minutes nothing responds to the mouse.

Update (10/10/2017)

iMac5,1 (20" screen)

2GB ram

OS 10.6.8

Available HD space: 210 GB

No anti-virus because OS not supported any longer. I tried to find one.

History is home office stuff. Recently a little more intense as I wrote a book using InDesign.

I did a force quit when it was acting up and only thing there was the finder.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding.

Apple has quite a few versions of iMac's can you narrow it down what you have here. Take a look here: EveryMac - iMac listing or plug your S/N here: EveryMac - Lookup. Then paste your systems URL here so we known what you have.

iMacs have been made for almost 20 years years. Which one do you have, How much RAM, what OS X? How much free hard drive space? Do you have a anti-virus program, and what is it? What's the history of the machine?

Do a force quit (command, option, escape) and tell us how many programs are running in the background.

UPDATE

This is probably your machine:

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 20-Inch Specs

Identifiers: Late 2006 - MA589LL - iMac5,1 - A1207 - 2118

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/...

It shipped with 10.4.7 and 1 GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive.

So it has been upgraded.

If you have the 10.6 retail disk you upgraded with, insert it. hit the start button then quickly hold down the "C" key. Go to the second page of the install action when the pull down menu appears. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility and run repair on the internal hard drive.
