MacBook dropped, screen shows vertical pastel colors

I'm helping someone who dropped their MacBook and they "think" it hit the ground near the hinge. There is a dark smudge on the back corner near where the MagSafe power adapter connects. When I boot it up the screen displays all vertical pastel colored lines. Pretty but not helpful. I was able to boot it into target firewire mode and get a copy of the user folder using my iMac so the data is safe. I ran disk utility on the volume and the S.M.A.R.T status is verified. The Apple logo on the lid is still lit. I've had the MagSafe adapter in for over 45 minutes now and it still seems to be charging (orange light not green) so I'm not sure if something is damaged there. The MacSafe adapter works fine in other MacBooks so the problem isn't there. Any advice would be appreciated. I found the directions for changing the screen here but I'm not sure about the charging device.

It's model A1181.

Processor Speed 1.83, Model A1181, Intel Core2 Due (merom) 64-bit architecture, I think Mac OS 10.6 installed but it's hard to tell with the stripes.

The LCD screen may be damaged or not. It could only be a near disconnected video (LVDS) cable that cause the stripes in the screen. I would first connect the macbook to an external monitor to check for graphic card malfuction then, open the macbook and verify all internal cables/sockets connections. Is the display misaligned with the case, any damage to the hinges ? Concerning the battery and charging status you may check in the Apple Menu "About this mac..." -> More infos -> Alimentation (sorry my system is french so it may be another menu title) to verify the charging system status.

Thanks. That worked great. I looked at the About This Mac and the display was listed as not connected. I opened up the MacBook and it appears just the display is damaged because everything is connected. Fortunately I have another MacBook that someone fried out with liquid damage so I'll switch out that display. I am SOOO glad there are how-to instructions on this web site. Very, very helpful.

Thank you lemerise for responding so quickly.

I attached the MacBook to an external monitor and booted it up. The good news is that the MacBook is now fully charged with a green light on the MagSafe adapter. Using the external monitor the MacBook only boots up to the default splash screen (looks like space travel). The finder menu bar does not boot even after 30-35 minutes so I amunable to check "About this Mac" info. I attached it back to my iMac with a firewire and I can see the MacBook volume with user folders, applications and such but I cannot access any "About this Mac" info. Examining the back of the MacBook there is no damage to the hinge and the case looks to be in place. I guess my next move is to crack open the case and take a look at the cable & socket connections.

You can boot your computer using just an external display. Just connect your external display, open the lid, hit the power button, and close the lid again immediately. Make sure the MB is connected with the AC adapter.

My sister dropped my macbook pro and it now has vertical lines going down the right side of the screen! Is it fixable and at what cost?
