Replacing the Logic Board with 2012 MBP LB?

Simple Question - Can anyone confirm that you can indeed take a 2011 15" MBP, remove the logic board, and insert a logic board from a 2012 15" MBP? If so, does it make any worthy difference (ie, performance, new features with OS, WiFi/BT) or is it simply too much work/effort?

Exactly which boards are you planning on going from and what board do you want to go to?

I would put the money into getting a bigger SSD drive than in a new logic board (if yours is still working)

You would have to cut the lvds connector up to make the existing lvds cable up. Not worth it. Wait for the GPU to die then you can do it.

Sorry Tim,

I'm running a MacBook Pro early 2011 with a Hi-res display now with a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 2012 logic board with no issues. No alterations needed.

I may be wrong but doesn't the LVDS cable have a hard time fitting in the existing connector? I may be thinking about the 13 inch models

There are two revs of the connector and one is so slightly larger (gold socket Vs silver socket). I've managed to use an emory board (filing very carefully both sides) to shave off a little of the ribbons clip edge (ground) on ones that don't slide in as the width is the issue (ever so slight a difference). Some do manage to go in so I'm not sure if this was a manufacturing defect or not.

If your system is working I would say it's not worth the cost.

Performance will be related to what you have now and what you get for a logic board. Review EveryMac's listings to see the numbers on the most part it's not that much a difference given the cost.

As to features, there are none within the OS its self between these models. The only notable difference is the speed of the USB port from USB2 to USB3.

Hi Dan, thanks for your response!

I found some examples of features I'd like to have from OSX High Sierra which are out of my reach now, but would be supported by 2012 MBPs:

-Handoff, Instant Hotspot, and Universal Clipboard

-Apple Pay on the Web

-AirDrop

-Metal 2

-Windows 10 installation capability via Bootcamp

If I could find a working logic board for cheap, I think it may be worth it for these features (Metal 2 and Windows 10 especially). Would love to hear your thoughts.

- Handoff needs the newer AirPort board

- ApplePay & AirDrop are both OS not hardware dependent.

- Metal as well as Metal2 have some CPU/GPU involvement, Both currently are not heavily used in apps, mostly used in gaming.

- Support for Windows10 in BootCamp is OS not hardware dependent.
