MacBook shuts down after AC is unplugged

Hey!

I have a Macbook air and I am trying to figure out what is wrong with it. The macbook doesn't work without the AC plugged in. The battery does charge after I disconnect and then reconnect the battery and the I/O flex cable. But when I reboot it after that it stops charging again and only shows a green indicator. Hardware test, SMC reset, PRAM reset and complete factory reset did not do anything.

Battery info is:

  • Battery Information:
  • Model Information:
  • Serial Number: D8612460820DKRNA7
  • Manufacturer: SMP
  • Device Name: bq20z451
  • Pack Lot Code: 0
  • PCB Lot Code: 0
  • Firmware Version: 406
  • Hardware Revision: 1
  • Cell Revision: 162
  • Charge Information:
  • Charge Remaining (mAh): 3356
  • Fully Charged: No
  • Charging: No
  • Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5888
  • Health Information:
  • Cycle Count: 727
  • Condition: Normal
  • Battery Installed: Yes
  • Amperage (mA): 18
  • Voltage (mV): 7739

Everything is original in the macbook and I have already tried it with other chargers.

My main question now is: can I find out if it is the battery, the I/O board or the I/O flex cable?

The laptop should be able to run off the charger only when battery is disconnected.

- If you disconnect battery and laptop works using charger only, replace the battery.

- If you disconnect battery and laptop cannot run from the charger, it means it has a board level failure.

The failing part may be the I/O board, the main logic board, or like as I just recently encountered, both I/O and main board.

Furthermore, the battery info as you've shown us seems to indicate that it is fine but not being charged by the laptop.

There is no easy way to diagnose I/O vs. main board except by testing with known good ones to narrow it down.

Thanks, disconnected the battery and it still worked using only the charger. Does this indicate that the I/O parts are not to blame or can they still be the root of the problem? My Macbook does started charging after I disconnected it just now and it can function only on battery for now, but it only charges with 2 Watts... Thanks for your help!

I would eliminate battery first. If a known good battery acts the same, move on to the I/O and main board.

You most likely have a issue with your CSO current sense lines or ISL6259AHRTZ (U7100) chip. Try a new battery and if it still does it you have a board issue. This is pretty common on older machines. The ISL fails over time and causes issues like this.

Best of luck!

@tcrs_circuit good answer but wait and see how this develops. Go from easy to difficult. Don't run before you walk.....:-)

OK I see what your saying.

The great majority of the people looking for answers on this forum do not know about current sense and ISL. Some of them can differentiate between part failure vs board failure. A few can reach board level troubleshooting.

I usually write a general answer and like @oldturkey03 said, funnel them towards more precise troubleshooting if they require so or need to.

Sometimes I know the answer straight away and still post the diagnostic steps to help other people - with similar yet not exactly the same issue - apply them in a systematic approach to arrive to a conclusion.

Ben's laptop runs from AC power. He needs to rule out battery before moving on to board issues. Someone else's computer may not run off AC and they will immediately know they have a board problem to diagnose, or repair or replace if they wish. The same answer thus helped different people having different problems.

@rany @oldturkey03 I see what you are saying. I do need to slow down. I am use to answering for other techs and I need to remember that I need to answer more generally here. Sorry about that.
