Chip/Crack in Glass caused by dropping it. Replace or Repair?

I foolishly got an iPad without a case and now I'm starting to regret it. I usually put my unprotected iPad in a Mead Five-Star binder when I'm not using it, but that turned out to be the worst decision I ever made.

One day, when I wasn't paying attention, I forgot to zip up the binder before I moved it. When moving the binder, the iPad fell out and one corner hit the solid flat concrete floor and it landed screen-side down.

I'm willing to bet that there were tiny stones on the floor since people were walking in and out of the building. The screen may have hit a stone, since there is now a chip/crack in the glass that is not removable.

Chip/crack in glass (the crack is the "scratch-looking" thing, the rest of the "dot-looking" things are dust.): http://twitpic.com/3pwvsz

I am very persistent on things working 100%, and now that this has been dropped, it's down to 95% for me. I need help on whether there's a "auto glass" repair you can make to just make the chip disappear like you do on an auto windshield. Or, whether this thing needs to have things replaced? I cannot live with myself having this chip on the screen. Especially since I spotted someone with a case just an hour before the incident happened. In short: This cannot be "brushed off/live with it".

I checked my SN on the Apple site and there is still warranty on this. But it's highly doubtful warranty applies in this situation... What also doesn't help is that this is a second-hand iPad. (but I created the chip/crack, not the previous owner)

UPDATE:

I have replaced the iPad. Cost of the replacement was $275. I have invested in a case and a screen protector for the iPad and now everything's back to normal (restoring from a backup was also painless).

I noticed subtle backlight unevenness on my old iPad after I dropped it, turns out my new iPad has this too and it is most likely on all iPads ever manufactured. A non-issue, since the manufacturing process created these "bright-spots".

Hi Jack,

There's no shame in trying to see if Apple will take care of it for you. Chances are slim to none that it will work, but who knows -- they may take pity on your case.

The replacement glass for the iPad is currently $150, and that still won't fix the dent on the body. You may want to consider selling your iPad to someone who may not necessarily care about the scratch'n'dent, and then use that money to get yourself another second-hand iPad that's in a better shape. I think it all really depends on how much money you stand to lose by selling it vs. investing time and money to fix a cosmetic scratch.

I know you said that "this cannot be 'brushed off/live with it'," but trust me -- it gets easier over time. I dropped my Droid about six months ago with the same result: it started falling towards concrete, but I managed to kick it into a bush. At the end of the ordeal, I had a nice 1/4" scratch across the screen, but the phone was intact otherwise. I lambasted myself for days for dropping the Droid; but then I realized the phone was now marred, and I didn't have to be as frantically careful with it as I was beforehand.

So consider that as well: now you can keep the iPad in your Five-Star binder, not spend extra dough on a case, and use it how you want to use it without having to fear dropping it again. And if you do drop it a second time and the screen cracks, then you don't have to replace the screen twice :)

From the time I posted this question, I discovered that the backlight is no longer even. Before the drop, the whole screen was even in brightness. Now there are pockets of brightness along the edges that are visually annoying if you have a mostly black screen that isn't black.

Put Apple iPad Glass Replacement into your Google Search and see what comes up. You may be happy with the options out there.

Do take into consideration that I live in Canada, and the majority of the results from a Google Search are all US based companies. Shipping it to them is very sketchy to me, so I want to keep it local (Vancouver, BC Local to be specific)

Jack,

You are correct the Apple warranty would not apply so, unless you bought insurance for it you are stuck. The scratch in the picture appears slight and may all but disappear if you used some Rain X on the glass. I also suggest you not only get a case but a screen protector. If Rain X isn't the solution you are happy with then you are stuck replacing the glass. Good luck.

I fixed a bad chip in my iPad with a rain-x winds bio repair kit and it worked great, had to do about three coats as I put a huge chip and crack in bottom left corner but looks good and didn't have to replace the screen
