New Battery Charges Slowly, and Discharges Rapidly

I have a 3G, running on 3.1.3 and 05.12.01. It is jailbroken. The battery it had when I bought it (used) would not charge. So I replaced the battery, and the new one wouldn't charge. So I replaced the battery block/charging port with a new one, as I found under close inspection that the connector had been damaged, aparently during a previous repair. The phone now charges, but very slowly.

1. It takes around two days to fully charge a 10-20% battery.

2. If the phone is on, but locked, the battery drains very quickly - Within a few hours of sitting quietly on the shelf.

3. If the phone is turned completely off, it holds the charge just fine.

4. The phone does not seem to be getting hot.

So any ideas? Thanks.

If you are simply putting the phone to "sleep " mode and not turning off then it will continue to drain over time (not usually over a few hours tho')

Have you checked the "grounding " prong above the battery on the motherboard is connected to the bezel? if not in good contact it can sometimes cause battery drain as it is using more power to maintain signal etc..

I would also try deleting all apps on the phone one by one and see if a rogue app is causing the problem.

The prong is good. I reset the phone so all added applications are gone.

I know you said you had replaced the dock/connection because of damage- was the damage on the dock itself or on the board connector? It may be worth having a clean and inspection of the board connection, make sure the screw is in properly over the battery (under don't remove sign) and cleaning all contacts for the battery. Check that battery is making full contact with the board and that pins haven't been flattened. I'm sure you may have tried this before but I have found in the past that a second look at things sometimes finds a simple problem

The damage was to the dock connector. I have cleaned every contact with an eraser. I have checked and rechecked the connections for proper seating, having removed/installed the board several times. The screw heads all make good contact with the board ground, and the screws all turn smoothly and seat firmly.

It seems there must be a significant short that is only active while the phone is turned on; either awake, or asleep. Does anyone have a clue as to which connections and circuits would be primary candidates, given that:

1. Phone on and active = battery drain.

2. Phone on and locked = battery drain.

3. Phone off = no battery drain.

am just troubleshooting this same problem-replaced dock, replaced battery, still slow charge/fast drain. I noticed incidentally that when the phone had been turned off/locked it was still "on" the vibrate still worked! So I'm going to investigate the headphone/power flex connection to see if the problem lies there..

pollytintop, does your phone have any other signs of damage? Are you sure you got a 3G battery, as opposed to a 3GS battery? My understanding is that they are different and not interchangeable. Many sellers on eBay call their batts "3G/3GS," withoug differentiating.

I'd be taking a closer look at the charging port. You said that at first it did not charge at all then you replaced the charging port and it charges very slow. I believe that you may have partially fixed the problem, but may have more damage on the port.

Thank you. But the charging port is brand new, so I don't know what else to check on it.

Current testing - In the last 8 hours, it has dropped from 97% down to 50%, while just sitting, powered on but locked.

Did you disable your wifi and just using edge for email and SMS alerts. also turn your push messages off and check all your apps to make sure that you do not have one that is downloading in the background. Turn your bluetooth of as well. Just to see where the power drain comes from of course. As for the port I would just make sure that contacts and connections are seated right and not overlapping or shortening out.

Push notifications were on, but set to manual. WiFi has been on, as it is on my other iPhone. Bluetooth is off. How do I check for running background applications?

Ron, try this :Rapidly double-click the Home button. The screen will slide up and a tape of the running applications' icons will appear at the bottom of the screen. This tape can be scrolled horizontally to reveal more applications.

To stop the running apps, hold down on one of their icons in the tape until they start wiggling. Then, click the (X) in the upper-left of the icons of the apps you want to terminate. There is no "terminate all running background apps" shortcut.

Double-clicking the home key does nothing.

Settings/General/Home has, "Double-click the Home Button for:" The available options are Home, Search, Phone Favorites, Camera, and iPod. Home is selected.

My 3GS works as you said, but I don't even see any "double-click the home button" option available on it.

I have a 3G and it was working fine on OS 3.1.3, However I had it update to OS 4.0 and thats when I started having battery problems. Eventually my charger stopped charging the phone, I had it checked and found that the charging IC was damaged by the charger. I had it replaced with a new one along with a new battery and now I have been charging the phone for the last 18 hour and still my battery is showing only 97 % If I use it to make calls or check e-mails it drops down to 92% just like that.Can any one help me understand this problem ?

Solution Iphone 4 batter slow charge SOLUTION

Just go to settings > reset > 'reset all settings'

This is the solution to get the Iphone back to normal (quick) charging!! 100% worked for me after anoying 2 weeks of figuring out WHY it charged sooo slow! You won't lose data/contacts. Only WiFi passwords and some basic settings, but this is not a big deal compare to the slow charge problem! Success!!

I don't know if it will help because i could be wrong. But if your using a 3g JB Iphone you don't have the multi task by double clicking the home button. my suggestion is to us your sb-setting and click on processees. this will allow you to see what your iphone is running. if there is several things going at once it might be your issue.

Thanks, but I unbroke the phone by resetting it to a downloaded 3.1.3 iOS. Then I checked the charging issues without ever starting any applications, and there was no change.
