wont start.. here is what I have already tried

Good afternoon.

My craftsman lt2000 with briggs and stratton model 247.288842 died while mowing the lawn. Because a mouse had gotten to the spark wire, here is what ive tried....

new magneto, new spark plug, new boot, new battery.. wont start.

turning was "hard" so i tried something i saw here, i took off the air filter and plugged the hole to check for a compression issue, while i had that blocked it turned over normal, but still wouldnt start...

checked for spark.. took out plug, touched to engine, turned key, spark confirmed.

checked solenoid, clamped gas line, took off solenoid, connected wire, turned key, solenoid worked fine

thought about clogged fuel line/filter, but the first time i took off the solenoid i forgot to clamp the fuel line and the gas came out like gas should come out of an unclamped fuel line.

put 2 teaspoons of gas down air box, covered air box [to compensate for compression valve] engine turned but did not start.

im really lost. im not a mechanic by any means, i know just enough to be handy, and follow instructions well.. but this is above my knowledge level now.

help?

@bscabl just to make sure that we a re all on the same page. When you tried to start it with gas in the air filter, you made sure that all your safety switches (like the seat switch etc.) were engaged.

double check your engines model number. It should be in a XXXX-XXXX format

@oldturkey03 parking brake was engaged, so that safety switch was good. blades were disengaged so that one was good.. and this one seems to only use the seat switch of the parking break or the blades are not engaged, its let me leave the seat while running plenty of times as long as i had the break on and the blades off.

phil gaudreau, Try the fuel trick again, directly in the carburetor again squirt/pour about a ounce in, if it does not start and run, pull the spark plug out to see if it is wet with fuel. If wet with fuel either you have weak/no spark(recheck gap between coil and flywheel, gap at plug/proper plug, etc.), valve stuck/needing adj., timing out(sheared key on fly wheel), sounds like you have compression should not be issue. If it does start and run probable dirty/sticking carb, faulty shut off solenoid if equipped as you have already stated fuel floe good to carb.

@lpfaff1 I'll try the fuel again, i did the spark plug against the block and got spark [so weak spark?] before.. i took the solenoid out before, from under the carb.. and it was clean and when i had it hooked up it operated with a keyturn properly. ive regapped the coil a couple times, tho im not sure the result if i gapped it wrong so its hard to know if i gapped it correctly. im not super comfortable messing with the carb itself :/

phil gaudreau, A normal type paper business type card will suffice for gaping the coil to flywheel .010"is pretty much the norm. Let us know if it runs when you add fuel to carb..
