won't suck disks in

A month ago my 1 year old and 3 year old were left alone with my Playstation 3 and they had my 1 year old had my RDR disk in his hand... which was in the drive and they were in the process of trying to shove a coaster in. It was a fat coaster so it wasn't working but I don't know If they shoved anything else in there or tried to push the disk in as it was trying to eject it or what. But I don't use the optical disk that much so I didn't think to check it. I have turned it on a few times since then and haven't noticed anything wrong.

Last night we went to watch a movie and I put in a disk and it sounded a little funny going in but it went in and it was not working (at the time I blamed the scratched library disk). I wiped it off and tried to put it in again but now the function to suck the disk in wasn't working at all. I tried to push it in part of the way and it will slide with moderate resistance but I didn't go more than 80 percent of the way in.

At this point when I start it up it sounds like its trying to eject a disk and it struggles for a good 10 seconds and then stops, still doesn't work. I tried to have the disk halfway in when I start it up in the hopes it may suck it in but it doesn't. I hold the eject button for 10 seconds or so and it sounds like it is trying to eject but its not.

Three questions:

  • Does this sound like a gear issue or something was shoved in there, any testing I can do to tell?
  • Anything else I can try to get this to work before opening it up?
  • I happen to have an old playstation 3 fat with a bad motherboard, are the blu-ray drives the same for both or could I somehow retrofit the PS3 fat drive into my slim?

I have only taken apart a few PS3's so this is my best advice based on the situation. You may want to take it to a local repair shop.

Does this sound like a gear issue or something was shoved in there, any testing I can do to tell? In my opinion yes, it sounds like either the bands, or gears have broken at some point. I know the PS3 has known ejector problems as well.

Anything else I can try to get this to work before opening it up? To my knowledge there is no ejector pin for this drive (you can double check) Theoretically if there was an ejector pin on the drive door, you could insert a paper clip, and physically force the door open. You can also follow the guide, and take the drive apart, if you're willing to spend the time.

I happen to have an old playstation 3 fat with a bad motherboard, are the blu-ray drives the same for both or could I somehow retrofit the PS3 fat drive into my slim? I do know that the drives have 2 different part numbers, I don't know of anyone who has tried to put a fat drive in a slim housing.

If they are different part numbers then I am very confident it will not work as the height level and everything need to be exact since it is a slot loading drive. But with that there wouldn't be an ejector pinhole, but I know what you mean for tray loading drives.

I had discovered my local repair place will take a look for free and if it is something shoved in there then it will just be $20.

Wow, that's a good price. I'm glad it worked out for you.

IF it is just that, then yea, good deal. Considering the system has been outdated for almost 4 years I don't plan on putting much more into it. If it can get fixed this scare may be the kick in the pants I need to start playing my games.
