Optical drive fan compatibility

I am trying to replace the optical drive cooling fan in a 20" iMac (A1224, EMC 2266). I purchased a new fan which is Apple P/N 620-3912. Upon opening the iMac, though, I found it contained Apple P/N 607-3309. The only difference appears to be the wire connector.

The old 607 fan in the iMac is connected with a connector parallel to the motherboard as iFixit shows for an A1224 EMC 2266. The new fan has a connector that would plug into a female socket perpendicular to the motherboard (as iFixit shows for the iMac EMC 2133 and 2210).

I'm tempted to simply cut the connector off the old fan and solder it onto the new fan. The wires from both fans are Brown - Black - Gray - Black. The old 607 fan identifies the brown wire as "+" and the gray wire as "out". Does anyone know if the two blacks are both ground? Are they interchangeable? My multimeter says they are not directly connected within the fan (failed continuity test).

It appears you have a:

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 20-Inch (Early 2009) Specs

Identifiers: Early 2009 - MB417LL/A - iMac9,1 - A1224 - 2266

The 620-3912 is out of a mid 2007 machine. I could find no listing for a 607-3309 (please check that number)

You need a 922-8841. The fan you got in may or may not work. Frankly I think you're asking for problems by trying to use the wrong fan. Personally I'd return it and get the correct part.

* AVC

* APPLE FAN P/N 607-3309

* AVC MODEL: BA07620B12H

* DC 12V == 0.57A

Yes, it looks like I need 922-8841.

How were you able to find the part number? Is there somewhere I can index from a Mac serial number to a list of internal Apple part numbers? I bought the 620-3912 based on it being advertised as for an iMac A1224 EMC 2266 (which is what the label on the iMac says). I assume my source made the mistake, yes?

I had the EMC numbers backwards in my original post - it's correct now. Yes, it looks like I have the wrong fan. I'm overseas, so it's not too easy for me to get a new fan, and it would be really good if I could get this working tonight. Hmmm.
