Is it possible to replace the sata connection chip of an external HDD?
Hy,
A little introduction:
I'm subject of Murphy's law here, click here If you don't know it yet.
Just after formatting my iPod, my internal drive broke down, and just after I got my MacBook back with a new drive (replaced under warranty), the drive of my back-up broke down, which means I lost all my data and especially my music.
I screwed the external hard drive open, it was a WD My Book, knowing it's nowhere near warranty anymore.
I looks like the chip burned down (actually it smells like that also) and I was wondering if I couldn't simply replace that chip. I know it could be possible to get my data back by sending it to a specialized company but they will charge my at least 500€, and being a student it's a lot of money for me.
Of I forget to say, I still have hope getting my data back like that because when I plug it in a sata to usb dock the drive still powers up and I can hear it spinning
So if anybody could tell me if this would be possible, and if so, how I would be very thankful!
Alexander

Are you talking about the on board chip of the HDD or the SATA to USB adapter?
