Anyone able to get their GPU replaced (via recall) outside of period?

I was having display issues, the screen was hanging on the white startup screen and then eventually over time went all black on startup, but the disks and fans were spinning so I took it to Apple and they kept it for a few days and then came back with a diagnosis of a failing video card, suggesting replacement. I declined given the price and took the unit home. I tried to get the card replaced via the recall (the serial qualified), but given that it was originally purchased in 2011, they declined.

Anyone have success getting their card replaced outside of the recall period? If so, how did you go about it?

Thank you in advance.

Recall: iMac (27-inch): AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card Replacement Program.

"If the iMac (27-inch) meets these requirements, Apple will replace the video card free of charge for four years after the first retail sale of the computer."

Technically the program has expired January 1st 2017 assuming you bought the system before the end of 2012. If they honor some state & country laws that apply to the sale date not when it was first sold (May 2011) their notice implies.

100% yes (key bits for me was that I bought it from Apple and the state of UK consumer law). In fact I just posted about my experience in another thread only yesterday:

Had mine replaced last week for free. It's the second time it has gone, both times the cards lasted for exactly 2 years and 9 months before failing. Apple initially said no to me in store and were going to charge £500+ until I gave a consumer law argument that the product was sold by apple defective, and then replaced with the same defective part (hence it has failed again). That argument worked for me in the UK, but expires after 6 years so it won't work again! It also only applies where the product was bought from apple direct, as consumer law responsibility applies to point of sale.

I know I've been lucky but it is still not nice to know I have 2 years and 9 months to go now before my iMac (which is otherwise perfect) dies again, and presumably at that point it will be declared vintage and parts unavailable."

I would still give it a try ASAP!

I would go to an Apple Store as they have a bit more discretion otherwise the Apple authorized service provider would have to back date the repair slip to sneak it in unless they get authorization which will be a hassle they may not want to do.

In any case make sure the system is visibly clean and if you have a good looking girlfriend have her be the one talking ;-} Shedding a tear will help.

If the tech won't accept it ask to speak with the manager, be firm but polite given the fact it's only a few weeks I think you can get it done.

But don't walk, run! As the clock is ticking! The longer you wait the less likely they will honor the recall.

Weren't you in the hospital or out of the country for a while or in Afghanistan? Mention "Warranty Exception".

@mayer - Yes! That was my point where the ASP would need to call it in. I don't often need to fight these issues as you do. Working as a contractor gives me a bit more freedom. Besides we have lots of Apple Stores here in Boston so I'm sure I'm a bit jaded as they tend to take care of me quite well.

Haha thanks, @mayer and @danj ! I already tried once at a local apple store and spoke with the manager. Is it worth trying another location or would they have logs showing history there as well??

Did Apple ever notify you of this recall personally? Probably not. The recall was the result of a class action law suit. Were you, as a registered owner of this machine, ever notified? I think you would win in a small claims court.

They will have a log of your visit (appointment) as to what they said or did that would be in the repair records so going to a different store likely won't make much of a difference ;-{ I would try seeing if you can get in touch with the regional service manager or give the ASP a try maybe they can sneak it in.

At worst you could try to get them to forgo the labor and you'll only get stuck with the parts cost.
