Component to replace to fix these shadows on my screen?

Dear all,

Lately I spilled some soda on my MBP 13". Had the MBP dry for a few days. To my surprise the device still works very good, have not experienced any problems with it. There don't seem to be any hardware problems, except of these shadows on the screen (see pics).

Is there anything I could do fix this? I have read articles with regard to replacing the inverter cable, but am not sure if this really suits my problem.

Could anyone comment on this and give advice?

Thanks in advance!

On any given screen there are strips of metal/plastic/tape along the edges of the screen which sort of "sculpt" the light, and focus it evenly onto the screen. I've seen cases in which these framing elements of the screen were loose, crooked, missing, etc., and this caused the lighting to become uneven. In other words, if the frame of the screen is warped, the light can sort of "leak out" of the screen and appear uneven, and I suspect some of your screen elements have been warped by liquid to the point where this is happening. Sometimes you can tape over the "leaks" and focus the light back on the screen, but with the severity in your situation, I'd say you most likely just need a new screen unit, although while taking it apart it would be interesting to see if you are able to manipulate the problem at all by applying pressure, using tape, etc. And of course I am talking about the inner screen unit and its frame, not the outer glass or bezel that is visible without taking the computer apart.

No, I don't think the inverter cable is the issue here. The inverter and cable are doing their job and getting light to the screen; the problem is with how the now-defective screen is distributing the light.

Thanks rdklinc, for your reply. So you think it's only necessary to obtain a screen (like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Replacement-LCD-...) and install it? This will make the backlight work correctly again?

Determining the extent of liquid damage is always difficult, but yes, based on your description, I would guess that replacing the screen itself would do it. Also, removing the front glass is one of the more difficult procedures, so depending on what level of repair difficulty you are up for, you may want to consider one of the screen replacement services on eBay. I think they generally go for about $250. It's more money than the screen itself obviously, but you may consider it worthwhile to avoid the hassle. Before ordering, definitely take a look at the iFixit guide to see if it's something you want to do on your own. Good luck!
