The iPad I'm looking at had occasional USB connection issues a few weeks back before it stopped charging completely(the home button was completely fine before that). Hitting it from the back while it's plugged in sometimes power it long enough to make it turn on or make a charging sound.
Is there a way to tell if the problem stems from the 30pin/home button ribbon or the charging circuitry on the logic board without taking it apart?

Have you tried a new 30-pin cable? Perhaps your cable is old or damaged and not making a good connection.
