The easy way. The hard way. No upgrades necessary.

The easiest way to trick Leopard into installing on G4 hardware with processors below the minimum clock speed is to use a program called LeopardAssist:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/265...

It automates the process of temporarily setting the PRAM to report the processor clock speed as 933MHz. I've used this program to install 10.5 on a 733MHz Digital Audio and a 700MHz iMac Flat Panel. This iMac is not a daily driver, I only use it to maintain my business iWeb pages and to pre-fill a few business forms for printing.

The Dual cores will help in normal day-to-day operations, so Leopard won't be painful to use. Put as much RAM into the machine as you can get your hands on, as well.

As an aside, I've successfully booted machines with well below the RAM and processor speed requirements using an external drive already containing a bootable Leopard payload. The result was not pleasant, but handy for troubleshooting...

I have Leopard on my 733 Mhz Quicksilver - the low-end version of Paul's model. LeopardAssist actually didn't work for me, alhtough the actual commands used by that app did (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?s...) oddly enough. It runs a bit slow, but quite well. I believe Leopard requires Core Image in addition to Quartz Extreme, so you may need to upgrade your video card. (I've got a flashed Radeon 9800 Pro, which works like a charm).

As far as dual processors go, Leopard is supported by a single 867 - so even if it's additive as David Iwanicki suggested, it's only a difference of 67 Mhz - pretty much negligible in terms of performance. The secondary processor will only help to speed it up.

OOps, stupid me, http://www.lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/uns.... Same basic commands, but the LEM was more general.

I installed Leopard onto a G4 Sawtooth 400MHz and it ran acceptably with Spotlight turned off. So your dual 800 should be just fine. But as was said before dump as much RAM in there as you can because it'll really help general multitasking in Leopard especially.

YES

1. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759

2. Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster) do not worry about 867, yours is "DUAL" so you be fine.

3. it says 512 MB RAM on apple website, I will go for 1 GB at least.

4. Good luck and please update us.

Actually, this is incorrect - Dual processors are not additive in order to meet the minimum processor speed.

david, thats true. you MUST meet that 867MHz mark.

see http://lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/openfir... for details.

I suggest you clone a drive with leopard, simpler than the first poster's option.

I know YEARS have gone by but after trying every day for a week to get Leopard to work on my intel MacPro to no avail I got one error using the genuine DVD installer disk using the original SuperDrive (it came with that I had removed and temporarily put back in) I got an error message from the installer that it could not find an appropriate VIDEO driver. SO IT WAS MY VIDEO CARD! (I had upgraded years ago but that upgrade turns out to not be compatible with leopard) out comes my trusty 800MHz G4 Quicksilver of course assuming it will install just fine but the installer told me it doesn’t work on this model G4 WHAAAAT!! Sooooo after digging around my 10TB archives of backup disks I found a very old (2012) copy clone backup of my WORKING leopard version when I still had the original video card my MacPro came with. I thought Ahaaa!!! I cloned that disk image from over 10 years ago into my G4 Quicksilver IT WORKS. It is a bit sluggish but I do have 1GB RAM in that machine so I should be fine. It’s SO satisfying!
