No beeps, no post just Black Screen

Hi all,

I have a HP pavilion dv2700 laptop with 3gb of memory and a SATA hard drive. I reinstalled the OS (vista) using the recovery tool from the options. F11 in this case, It all went well, everything installed and I was even inserting user details. I turned my back to it for a couple of minues and then I saw this black screen and the laptop would not react. I turned it off and on and there was no POST and just a plain black screen.

I tried to disassemble it to take dust out before and then I started to reinstall the OS. I probably messed it up right there.

I took everything out, the memory and tried them one-by-one and turned it on, it gave me 4 beeps. (I guess it was just saying there was no RAM) sometimes after putting everything back again it gave me 2 short beeps. Apart from that just the black screen that tells me the screen is good and there is reaction but there is no post , no BIOS... so I cannot go any further.

What can it be??? Please give me some suggestions.

Thank you so much for your answer. I really appreciate you taking that time.

I tried hooking up the laptop to a monitor to see what it could come up but nothing. I think it is the mother board that just got fried. Now, What happens when you use a heat gun on the chipset? will it reset it or something like that. I think Nvidia chips cause the heap issue in most of the HP laptops so it must be the video card. My friend gave it to me to see why this laptops would turn off sometimes. I worked with it for some hours and nothing wrong happened.. I reinstalled the OS as I said and then it died on my for no apparent reason. If he were your client what would you say???

That he needs to replace the Mobo even though when he brought it to you is was actually working???

Thanks for your replies.

The heat gun is just a temporary fix and the motherboards are known to be defective. If you want a permanant solution, just replace the system. The price of a replacment that has a high potential to fail is not enticing. I have replaced many of the HP dv2000-9000 series motherboards and unlike most replacements some came back dead depiste our efforts. We have come to the point that we will not do that kind of work on those laptops due to the money we have lost on such a lemon.

It is not easy to diagnose that kind of problem, but I can give you some pointers to narrow down the problem. *

1. First, remove the hard drive, wireless card, and CD drive to see if you can get it to post

2. Getting any kind of beep sequence is a good thing. It says that the CPU is still working and the problem is another peice of hardware. You were right to check the RAM, but sometimes a slot can go bad so make sure you try each memory stick in both slots.

If neither of these help, it is likely that that it is the motherboard. The motherboards on the dv2000-dv9000 series laptops have a lot of problems. I have been able to fix them, but not permanantly as the heat reflow trick but, it will only give you a month or two before it will do the same thing again. It is better just to replace the motherboard or another the system if you just want to smash it with a hammer.

I can post a photographic guide to this repair but in the meantime you can try following these instructions if you'd like.

1. Disassemble the laptop and remove the motherboard from the casing.

2. Use a heat gun on high for 15 seconds on the intel chipset and nVidia video chip.

3. Wait 10-15 minutes for both to cool down.

4. Turn over the motherboard and use the heat gun for 15 seconds to overheat the same areas you just did on the topside.

5. Wait 10-15 minutes for both to cool down.

6. Reassemble laptop and turn on.

What temperature would you use on the heat gun joel? Just curious. I have an acer aspire 5532 and it turns on, but black screen and no bios. Thinking of getting a pc analyzer. That will tell me if the bios puts out a code. Really interested in the heat gun approach. I already took the laptop motherboard out and put back in. Not hard at all to take mobo out.

that is a ridiculous answer! this beast is not even a year old, why should I strip it and risk it more? Worst laptop EVER!! I tried the stupidly obvious but really heating it up? this is a joke, just like your engineering.

The "black screen of death" is usually very easy to repair on a laptop. First turn your computer off by pressing and holding down the start button. Next unplug the computer and then remove the battery. Press and hold down the start button for about 60 seconds. Release the button and plug in the computer. Press the start button and the display should return. If it returns replace the battery. If this does not work, try it again up to four times. No results usually indicates a bad mother board. Hope this helps.

Chuck everybody here appreciates each others help, but do refrain from cutting and pasting the same canned answers to similar questions. It is much more helpful if you address the individual issues versus the use of your standard answer. Especially on questions that are multiple months old.

After logging in, it shows black screen only. Try opening the task manager and under performance, click the “Open Resource Monitor“ on the lower left. I stumbled upon it and it worked. I hope it works for you guys as well.

Removed battery, held power button for about 15 seconds. Put battery back in and pressed power button. 1st boot and got a screen and came here to report. Looks to be caused by trying too many different driver sets causes conflict. Clearing them out brins it back.liquids spills ate kb and inte4rnal mouse equiv so US B hardware kb and mouse and clean boot process worked on mine. Not sure which vendor product next but it will NOT be an HP. That is all.
