Hi,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount

Here is a link that in general, describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You will probably have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Hello Daniel,

Distilled water and a cleaning solution (Branson EC) are often used to clean electronics that have sustained water damage. Distilled water is non conductive and safe to use. What makes the water conductive are the impurities in the water. Salts, minerals and electrolytes in the water conduct electricity between the components on the board causing corrosion. To clean the corrosion of a board effectively you will need to remove it, desolder the shields and use a quality ultrasonic cleaner. Follow that with a bath of 90% to 99% isopropyl alcohol to displace the water and allow to completely dry. I then connect to a known good screen, battery and dock port to test the board.

Water damage, if not treated propererly and immediately, can be a rabbit hole. Most good techs will not do water damage repair but only treat for data recovery.

Good luck

Holger

Daniel, in the chemistry world, "de-ionized" means there are no electrolytes, i.e. charge carrying ions of (generally speaking) minerals, in the water. "Distilled" means there are no electrolytes _and_ there are no dissolved gasses/organics in the water. A seemingly small difference, but various gasses, e.g. carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, etc. can disassociate into acids in solution, which isn't the best thing in the world. De-ionization is usually accomplished with an ion exchange resin, distillation is accomplished by heating and condensing the resulting gas, i.e., steam. Short version: Distilled is "purest" and best for electronic device cleaning.

Both are just fancy words for filtered water.

It doesn't matter how finely filtered the water that hit your phone was, it's still water and it still conducts electricity, causing short circuits, corrosion etc.
